For you folks that keep your pets outside...please think of them and keep them a cool place with plenty of water. They can dehydrate and have heat strokes quickly just like humans....

My two labs love swimming in the lake. How long can I keep them outside swimming? I really do not want them to overdo it. They are 10 and 11 but i don't want to keep them inside the whole weekend.

When it comes to overheating and overexertion dogs are much smarter than humans.  If they get hot they will seek a cooler spot.  If they get tired they find a spot to rest.  Your dogs will let you know when they are ready for their inside nap.  I think roswellric was referring to those folks who keep their animals outside, possibly with inadequate shade and/or water.  But even shade and water might not be enough in this heat.  I've already brought my outside dogs in and its not even noon.

Thanks for your help.  There is plenty of shade for them to rest.

Also think of your pets when the fireworks start. Most do not like the explosions and will look for somewhere to hide. Keep them inside when it gets popping in your part of the lake.
