Back before the Tallapoosa River was dammed by Alabama Power, plans were underway to build a dam further up stream at a place known in the very early 1900s as Buzzard Roost Shoals. Does anyone have any idea where Buzzard Roost Shoals might have been?

I believe I read somthing years ago that it was first going to be in the area of HorseShoe Bend, but the Soil/rock was not stable enough. But that was along time ago

Hey attitude, does Lake Cumberland/Corps. give you nightmares? Living just outside of Nashville and all. Or do you think Dale Hollow would absorb the mess.

I have a book somewhere around here that has indian definitions for a lot of city names in Alabama.

"Sylacauga" is (Cherokee?) (maybe Creek?) indian for buzzard roost. There's a morbid story that goes along with it that I shall not share here.

Dale Hollow or Cordell Hull would be able to handle a collapse of Lake Cumberland's dam.... But.. We also have another dam upstream of Nashville that is having Dam problems.... Center Hill has been leaking and eroding (*I can't think of what the Corps calls it) the limestome under and around it....

I, however, dont feel threatened.. I live where even Noah would feel safe. : )

I did the below post on my blog a while back. It has some links to really good old maps of Alabama. I took a quick look at one of them and couldn't find Buzzard Roost on it but that doesn't mean it's not there, I only checked one.

Found an entry that states "Buzzards Roost Shoals was on the river 5 miles NE of down town Alex City". Google "Buzzards Roost Shoals" and get two articles (Page 1 and 2) on why the location of the dam was changed.....

maybe it's the same thing as Erwin Shoals? That's what we call it today and it is roughly 5 miles from downtown.
