Guys,

I went for a nice walk in Marina Marin today and an approximately seven month old Black Lab with no ID followed me all the way home. The pup is neutered and apparently house and crate trained. I looked for the owner most of the day and had no luck. Someone in the neighborhood said the pup had been around for three days or so. He is going home to Atlanta with me tomorrow if I can't find the owner so please let me know if you have lost a lab pup (probably 40lbs already). Thanks!

Hey Bob, You may have a nice new dog and the better off for it. It does sound like a very nice dog. We all get luck now and again. Let us know what you name it.

P.S. - You could name him or her M&M for the area you were walking in.

I bet there is joy in your house this eveing.

You picked the wrong day to go door to door looking for it's former owner - they just thought you had started trick-or-treating early.... Congrats on your new dog, if you have not owned one before you are in for a treat. Ours now is a Golden/Lab pound puppy from the Shelby County shelter and has become one of the family (after about two minutes). I would suggest getting 3-packs of cheap tennis balls, and an Aerobie Squidgie Disc (about $4 from Academy). You want to keep him/her busy and his/her mind off chewing - my wife had a Black Lab before we got married, and he loved the lake, a swing set and a garden hose. Fortunately for all of us, he was not able to chew up the lake; the swing and garden hose ended up sacrificing all but the metal pieces. :-)

one of the best things you can do for your dog is to subscribe to the Whole Dog Journal. You would be shocked to find out what is in some of this dried food these days... this is a credible reviewer of foods and they don't recommend a food unless they can go to the plant to verify what goes in the dog food.

Good dog food is cheaper than veternarians.

I am surprised RR did not (he ususlly does)also mention the importance of a good collar with ID tags. I also have both my dogs micro-chipped.

Some coon hunters even have their dogs tattooed.

Yes I am fanatical about tags. What is it?... 90% of untagged dogs do not return home....

I have one that was tattooed by the breeder. He's 11 years old though and before microchips.

Another thing that is a mystery to me is that many pet owners do not neuter and spay here. Unless you are considering breeding or showing a dog why would you want to deal with a dog "in love" and all the problems and expense associated with it? I have seen many male dogs scraped up off the road because of that. Not to mention getting chewed up. Oh well to each his own.

I don't get the spay/neuter thing either. I think it is responsible pet ownership to have animals spayed/neutered. I see an awful lot of intact males around. I know some people think that it is "natural" to let animals mate. There are good health reasons to spay and neuter, as well as behavioral benefits.

The Whole Dog Journal is great. They have a Feline version too.
Some of the companies that we think of as being "good" food is full of fillers and melamie from China. You may remember that there was a real problem with cat and dog foods last year. Some of the companies claimed to have cleaned up their acts, but did not in reality.

And while we're on the subject, it's really important to make sure that your animals are innoculated and get their heart worm.
My sister unfortunately learned her lesson too late, when her GSP fell over dead from heart worms last year at age 8.

You and my wife sound just alike! Our 90 lb baby lapdog had a cancer and she broke out the supplements. The dog has lived through everything almost. All of her pets live forever so I married her :-)

I was really surprised to find that some of the food the vets sell don't make the cut either.

Our last dog - a Dalmation "Rush" died of renal failure, we had to put him down Jan 1, 2003, about 5 months shy of his 8th birthday, but were up to date with shots and heartworm preventative. This was before all the talk of melamine and the other poisons in some dog food. When the news broke, my mother asked if we thought that could have been the cause..... We ask our vet a lot more questions about Maizy. I am headed downstairs for a beer - I need one now.

I had friends that lost cats due to the Melamie problem. After the news broke, a few more were sure their cats had been affected but no one was aware of the problem.

It's hard enough to lose them to old age, but to lose an animal in it's prime is just awful.

Dogs often pick their owner as opposed to the other way around. I've got one that picked me and we have a unique relationship. Hope yours works out as well.
