Anyone know why the shrubs on 280 in Alex City are being ripped out? Do you think they will be replaced (I bet not).

The state highway department says they must go!

Any specific reason why?

I imagine it is for the same reason the decorative pear trees were ripped out about 4 or 5 year ago (I seem to recall) since it blocked the view of folks trying to make turns or U-Turns into the other direction.

Meaning they would present a safety hazard. If it saves one life, then I agree.

You would of thought Alex City would of learned the first time around. Maybe, they just have an absent minded management in this specific area. I know the Alex City Police loved to hide behind them to catch speeders. I do think the violaters should be caught and ticketed.

There are really too many speeders in that specific area of 280. I guess it is hard to change from 65 to 45 for some folks.

They contend it's a safety issue...shrubs with potential 24" height creates vision problem within 150' of intersections...trees with diameters above 4" are deadly for drivers crossing the median other than at intersections...assume it's less deadly to run into oncoming traffic. Don't know why we just don't prohibit traffic on 280 thereby eliminating accidents.

This is just my take...maybe someone from ALDOT or the brotherhood of ambulance chasers could add some clarity to the issue.

ALDOT did the same thing with the trees in the Hwy. 31 medium between Vestavia and Hoover. There was a lot of public outcry but it did no good. Ripped ‘em all out and replaced with little switches. There was an argument that if you should hit one of the trees, it would keep you from going head-on against oncoming traffic in the other direction. Fell on deaf ears.......

The ones in Dadeville are more of a Vision Problem than the ones in Alex City.

That would be a reasonable argument if it weren't for all the "litter on a stick" signs they either allow or do nothing about.
