One interesting thing I've noticed both locally and on the internet. Usually by this time, stores have a lot of merchandise that they bring in specially for the Christmas rush. More upscale items, and the kind of "gifty" things that people buy in the Christmas frenzy.

I'm noticing that the stores are not filled with inventory this year. Yes, they are "decorated" for Christmas but the surplus of "stuff" isn't there. Even the big box stores aren't filled.
And a lot more of their inventory is marked down. Lots of stores usually hold off their mark downs until just before Christmas or just after. Not this year.

I guess the retailers aren't counting on Black Friday this year to get them through. No impulse buys this year "because it's Christmas".

Have to say that I don't think this is a bad thing. Lots of people go overboard at Christmas only to wake up to January's bills. Maybe this year everyone's taking a more realistic approach. (Except Neiman Marcus, of course)

...a hedonistic frenzy. Our economy needs inventories depleted. Oh... I forgot. All of those goo-gahs are made in China, Mexico, Thailand...

There are no limits to your desire to protect the continued failures of your beloved messiah; even a preemptive excuse for the fact that stores are afraid to stock up for Christmas because of 17% unemployment. Maybe o-BAMA disciples will cancel Christmas in favor of another birthday; what's his birthdate anyway?

kinda limits what folks can buy, you know? Stores have to be realistic too, and people in this area of the country just don't have much money to spend. No jobs, no money.

Stimulus being used for bat caves and such. States that didn't vote for BO not getting much of anything. Democratic handouts don't create jobs. Wonder when they are going to realize that?

Not a registered Republican here, always vote independently for the person, but have to say that this administration isn't helping the everyday person - unless one belongs to a union.

Also have noticed several national ads for Christmas promoting the 'simpler things', etc. This will be a no-frills Christmas for many - IF they even have a Christmas at all.

Sad times...

I avoid the malls and department stores like the plague but with real unemployment close to 20% I think the retailers are expecting a grim year. Been several articles in the WSJ lately to that effect. Their plan might be to keep inventories down to avoid the deep discounting they had to do last year to move inventory.

What will be interesting is if sales "exceed expert's expectations" (whoever they are) will the stock market go up? It always drives me crazy that we have to not only try to understand what is happening in the economy but also see what the so called experts or analysts are predicting. It is the height of absurdity when we lose 500,000 jobs but it's considered good news because experts expected 520,000. Or when sales are up 3% over last year but its bad news because experts projected sales would be up 3.5%. Not sure how I got on that topic but I got it off my chest....

It will be a simple Christmas at our house this year... something I have always wanted. But, it will be austere because of economic realities… not for the sake of reverence for the Child.

There are more layoffs coming. Have you noticed that Obama is calling for s 5% reduction in domestic spending? This will mean a drop in federal contracts. The civil servants will not lose their employment... contractor employees will lose theirs.

Merry Christmas, America… the change for which you voted… has arrived.
