If you are over 55, you won't be able to discern any difference. The only consideration should be size; but again, that doesn't matter much anymore either.

Did tons of research on this.
LCD has no glare and produces less heat. If purchasing larger than 32", go 1080p and 120Hz. Google "LCD vs. Plasma".
I look at www.techbargains.com and gottadeal.com and http://dealspl.us/ daily. Also, watch the Black friday ads. Many stores are offering online deals with free shipping!

In the bar area we went with plasma because viewing angle was a primary concern, upstairs went with LCD because of glare coming from windows on the wall opposite the TV. Right now suggestions that I hear are LCD for brightly lit rooms, plasma for darker. Plasma handles quick motion better, for the most part has better blacks, but is a good bit heavier.

Don't worry about 1080p vs 720p. The only way you can utilize 1080p is with a blueray player or a playstation 3 console. Blueray is too new to invest in yet. 720p = 1080p in high def unless watching blueray or playing playstation 3.

I recently went through the same thing. I was looking for a 32in. Ended up with Samsung 650 model which is 32 inch 1080. We are extremely satisfied. 1080 in a 32 maybe overkill but I tend to overbuy for the future. I don't like to look back and say gee for a few hundred more I could have had...
Went with LCD because room has light with no covering over the sliders to the outside.
I purchased it from ABT online and it was a painless transaction. If you buy locally, I found that Sears runs some real deals instore if you have the time to shop. Plus, if you buy from Sears open a charge count and they will take off 10% additional. I put mine on a Credit card that doubled the warranty.
I am now in the market for a 52in and will look at an LED which is the newest technology.
What is discouraging is when you go in and think a 32 will be large enough. Then you see the 37,40,42,46 and say for a few more dollars I want thew 52.
Make certain the cable company uses an HDMI cable to connect your HD box to the TV. There is a noticable difference in picture quality between regualar RCA type wires and the HDMI which is an all in one.

I have been in several houses over the last two years where owners have over 8 plasma TV's. All that money spent on TV's and I can't find a D_____ thing to watch. If it were not for SEC football and certain other (few and far between) specials, I wouldn't turn the TV on. Programing gets worse each year.
Prime time TV was better when we had only 3 channels to watch. You knew what came on each night from 7-10. Now there is a channel with a man eating insects, another trying to catch a tornado, another showing cars getting repoe-d, another with meter cops writing tickets, another with cop chase scenes, another with people going from economy entry level house to house trying to decided which one to purchase. a show of people getting tattoos.
Man! I wish the Alfred Hitchcock hour could be re-released or maybe the Real McCoys,Gunsmoke, Have Gun Will Travel,the Fugitive, some who done it types.
It amazes me that some much is spent on TV's yet there is so little to watch.

I was thinking of getting some of the small 15" LCD's from Wall-Mart I think they are about $170 and the flip up brackets for the boats.

LED is not new tech. Sony has had it for years. The "NEW" LED tvs, are really LCD that is backlit with LED instead of florescent.

itisd, you hit the nail on the head. I think all of us have been spoiled with all these hdtv's and nothing to watch. Why not do as I have. Cancel the cable tv and just watch old things here. You will need high-speed internet.

I have a 25 inch LCD monitor so why not use it. I rent movies from time to time using amazon download but watching tv is out for me.

itsid and cobra-- If you get the new digital tv's you can watch the old programs. I have directv and get the retro channel from Columbus and Montgomery. I use a rotor antennae in my attic for the locals. Works great MOST of the time. Live in Opelika.
