Subject:   Com-Link cable??
Date:   11/28/2009 1:21:37 PM

Anyone familiar with Com-Link cable? I am getting conflicting info about what they offer, and of course no one answers the phone when I call them. (Are there ANY cable companies that understand the concept of customer service?)

My specific question is: what are the tiers of service? They have a website that says that "basic" is the usual 50-60 channels, but a card that calls this "Expanded Basic." If it is in fact expanded, what's "just plain basic?"

If they offer a "very basic" that includes locals and not much else, it could really help those who like the channels-to-price ratio offered by DISH and DirectTV, but who also need local channels.

But unless they decide to answer the phone, we might never know. Which makes me leery about getting Com-Link cable, because if they aren't there to answer easy questions, how hard is it to get them when you have a real problem?

We have Comlink, had it for years. They are local and I always get a 'live' person when I call during regular business hours. As far as the 'tiers' go, we use them for internet, HD channels/DVR and basic cable. The rate is less expensive than what we have w/Charter in Bham.

I had a bad experience with Direct TV in Birmingham and seitched to Dish up there. I have used Com-Link for internet for years with very good service. It is right that you can always get a helpful human during normal business hours. However, in my zeal to replace Direct I called Windstream which reps for Dish in their "bundles". I ended up changing my land line deal with them which ran between $85-90 per month to a plan that includes internet access and unlimited long distance for $70. If I change to Dish here I will add it to the bundle but there really is not futher saving. I was paying $36 for the internet access.

Above does not answer your question but I looked at Com-Link and they just do not offer the HD package I have grown used to so I will stay with Direct or Dish (I still like Direct the best). However, if that is not real important to you Com-Link has given very good service and they come right out if you do have a problem.

Were you here for Thanksgiving? Seems most of the slough was. How the construction project.

Happy Holidays,

8

Pay attention this time. :-)

I have seen their website.

I have also seen the channel line-up card that they leave with subscribers.

What the card says is different from what the website says.

What the website calls "basic," the card calls "expanded basic." My question: expanded from what? Follow-up question: if (and I do mean IF, since I still don't have an answer) "basic" and "expanded basic" are one and the same, why call them different things?

I researched it last year for my parents and dish had much more to offer in packages; com-link was very limited in comparison. I use Windstream for phone/internet and Dish for for TV. I have been very happy with both. My parents use ATT for phone/internet, and I've heard no complaints

I guess I'm making this too complicated. Let me try again.

I DON'T care about internet.

I DON'T care about phone service.

I KNOW what DISH offer. I KNOW what DirectTV offers.

IMPORTANT INFO HERE: DirectTV does not offer the local channels in my area. DISH does offer local channels, BUT many in this area can't get them, because or interference from trees, hills, and the like.

So I was wondering if Com-Link offers a locals-only package.

The Com-Link website lists no such thing; on the website, "Basic Cable" is about 60 of the usual channels: locals, ESPN, TBS, CNN, etc.

HOWEVER, Com-Link gives their subscribers a channel line-up that calls the above package "EXPANDED Basic."

So my question is: if that is EXPANDED Basic, what is "BASIC?" (And if they are one and the same, why call them two different things?)

Sorry, I can't make it any more simple without breaking out the Crayolas. :-)

Nothing like talking down to those trying to help. May I suggest you just wait till Monday and call them for the info.

I too had a hard time getting to get an answer from Com-Link until I found a number in Union Springs; 206 Hardaway Ave E, Union Springs, AL 36089-1609, (334) 738-2204.

If you loose the number, Goggle Com-Link Union Springs, Al. Since I have had this number I have had no trouble getting someone to answer – at least during normal business hours. Very nice people is my experience. I just started using their internet service this year and am very satisfied. I have the next to the bottom level of service and my download speed is over two and one half times faster than my next to the top level DSL service with AT&T in Hoover. I realize this does not answer your basic question, but you should be able to reach a person to answer your questions. Plus their web site shows the cable stations available.

I can see where he is coming from. He asked a question, and got many answers to other questions, but no answers to the question he asked. That must be frustrating, especially when it happens several times. I would say that if you want someone to not talk down to you, then show them some respect by paying attention to their post before you try to answer it.

Oh no, BigFoot, you may have to put together an online course on "101 Forum Question Answering Without pixxing off the one asking the question".

I have found that people on the forum try to be very helpful. They may not know the answer to your question but will offer what they know, what their experience is, and they hope that the info they have will help just a little bit. There are few "know it alls" on the forum, and since they are know it alls, they know who they are. From what I read the folks did answer some of your questions, except the rhetorical "How can basic be extended basic at the same time?" Maybe ComLink can answer that and maybe they, like most of us, were not at the phones during a great holiday weekend.

My answer is not complete either, but (1) I have always found Comlink friendly and helpful during business hours (2) I have found Comlink prompt and responsive to problems during non-business hours (3) I have the next to bottom service and get great service, except for some infrequent "freezing" of the screen, and ABC seems to have the most problems (4) I have had internet service--I know you don't want this but I like it--and it has performed very well (5) I got zapped by lightening last February and ComLink was here with me for several hours getting their part back in shape.

I will do better with my answer after BigFoot puts together the training materials

Good morning, Jalcz;

I, too, have had difficulties getting in touch with the cable companies, and I wish you the best of luck. I just gave up on working with any of them, and went to satellite.

While not directly in response to your question about contacting cable companies, I was surprised at your comment, "..IMPORTANT INFO HERE: DirectTV does not offer the local channels in my area. DISH does offer local channels, BUT many in this area can't get them, because or interference from trees, hills, and the like..."

The local channels (Montgomery, WSFA, etc.) are broadcast by DishNetwork from the Echostar satellite at 110 degrees west, transponder 31, spot beam 11. The great majority of other DishNetwork 'national' channels are on the 119 and 118.75 West satellites.

What does this translate to? Well, from the Lake Martin area, the 110 satellite that carries the 'local' signals will be higher in the sky than either of the two 'national' feed satellites. Specifically, the 110W satellite is roughly six degrees higher in elevation than the others. This means that the 'local' signal is much less likely to be blocked by, "...trees, hills, and the like..." than the 'national' satellites.

I would suggest that if someone is having problems receiving the 'local' DishNetwork channels, that they have their system checked. In using the DishNetwork 500 series receiving system, we have had no problems at all with the 'local' feed from the 110 satellite.

Cheers

RadioActive

and get your dock checked out.....dock problems tend to make one short tempered and grumpy.

With the water dropping rapidly, many docks are getting less use; could be you need to develop a plan to properly deal with the seasonal change.

You can call Com Link At 800 722 2805 Monday--Saturday 7:30--4:00, someone will answer. The best person to speak with is Debbie. They do not offer a local only package, their basic package is "expanded basic" anything other than that requires one of their digital boxes. Hope this helps

I am not qualified to teach that course and here's the reason: During my 1st qtr. at Auburn in 1962, I was extracted from my room in my undershorts in the middle of the night...blindfolded me and drove me to the nasty, notorius "hogpond". They stripped me of my shorts and threw me into that muddy pit on a cold dark night and abandoned me. I had not a clue as to where I was but eventually wound my way up a desolate dirt road until my feet found precious asphalt. Butt-naked, I lumbered back toward campus until being picked up by the Campus police..they delivered me back to my dorm--just as they had done many before me. That pixxed me off and set the bar for being pixxed so high that I have not been pixxed off since...now there was that Georgia game at Auburn when Herschel broke loose and crushed our spirits..no, that was not the problem...when I returned to the parking lot, discovered that my best friend had already left--taking all my beer and fried chicken with him...now that almost pixxed me off...but everything has been fine since!

i do not have a direct answer to your question, but if no one will answer the phone, that should tell you something. I live in Manoy Creek area and am very satisfied with Charter. I have also seen several references to Cable Busters in Alex City. Give yourself an early Christmas present and call someone else.

That's the answer I was looking for! Not the answer I wanted to hear, but at least I got it before I took the plunge. I know someone who is not going to be happy at all when he hears that he is either stuck with no locals for a couple of years, or has to convince DISH to let him out of his agreement.

If he has DISH he should already have locals

I signed on for DISH as soon as I heard that they offered the local channels. When they came to install it, the tech looked around and said "You can't get locals here." I asked why not, since I had the clear line of site that their website said I needed, and he just said that there were too many obstacles. When I told him I didn't want the system if I couldn't get the local channels he hemmed and hawed and made a few phone calls, but when all was said and done he left without installing anything. There were a few tense moments when the DISH office tried to make me adhere to the two-year commitment, but I told them "You can't meet the obligation you promised."

SO my word of warning is: even though DISH offers local channels, make sure you can actually get them at your house before you sign anything.

I wish this thread had started a month ago. Put me in the "still waiting for Dish to deliver those locals" category. And this after two live technicians, three on-line or phone consultations, four different solutions-- zero that worked-- and at least one blatant lie. (Installer: "your locals should download in about ten minutes." Tech #2: "There's no way you can get local channels with this set-up; the person who installed it had to know that.")

Like I said, I wish this thread was a month old; it could have saved me a lot of hassle.
