I don't mean to complain, but, I don't feel good about

12 trillon debt for my grandkids

social security going broke

medicare going broke

US postal system going broke

and the federal government, with it's track record is taking over my health care??

I feel sick, except not sure my deductible covers needing to puke.

A glimpse into the thought process of the Congress:

"Today we are closer than we've ever been to making Sen. Ted Kennedy's dream of universal health insurance coverage a reality," Sen. Tom Harkin, D-Iowa, said ahead of the vote, alluding to the late Massachusetts senator who died of brain cancer in August.
"Vote your hopes, not your fears. Seize the moment," Harkin urged colleagues.

Ther is an old saying - "hope for peace, but prepare for war". The Government is out planting flowers and knitting scarves.

What has changed, other than the deficiet?

Social security and Medicare have been going broke for years now. I think for the last 10 years, they've been telling us not to count on Social Security because the government took our money and spent it, so they've got nothing but a filing cabinet of IOUs. Why, I even remember GWB talking about it.

And the Medicare I think has been underfunded since the day it was started.

The postal service was going broke when it was a government entity, so then they privatized it, and it's still going broke. I read an article the other day about how lavishly the post office is entertaining, they are giving $200 watches away as retirement gifts, and have just now put an $800,000 cap on property that they will buy back to move one of their employees.
They are a wasteful and poorly managed entity, but it still costs less for daily mail in this country than any other.

And as far as the Federal government taking over your health care -- well, they will continue managing Medicare, but the so called "public option" has been taken off the table for this round. I did have a giggle the other day when some Congressional person observed that they were "building a starter home, not a mansion...". Heck of a "starter home" for $871B.
So the government won't be taking over health care -- we'll continue to be at the mercy of the insurance companies, who will likely raise their rates, because BC/BS of Alabama says they hate, hate, hate the new provisions. And we know what happens when those folks hate something.

So cheer up Alahusker, it's all good.

A friend's daughter was denied coverage due to pre-existing conditions, and I was shocked and concerned. After checking into it, I understand - if the insurance company has to accept these people and there is no requirement to have health insurance you will have those who will not pay premiums until they have a need for benefits. As far as the gouging insurance companies, BCBS and Kaiser are not for profit companies as I am sure others are. Since our Government is FAR more efficient than private industry, I am sure that they will do a better job at keeping costs down though.

For some reason, that got me to thinking about the joke about the stuttering cat (not CAT). :-)

No. But, I recently read that 80% of the people in Alabama (presumbably those that are insured) are insured through BC/BS Alabama. Further, they do quite a bit of dictating to Drs. and hospitals what they will and will not do. So that doesn't strike me as a particularly good situation.

But, I don't know where you are going with government controlled health care -- the public option is dead.

And I don't see anything in a bill that is going to control health care costs in the future. My health care went up $23. per month and my per office visit copay went from $20 to $30. And a lot of pressure is being brought to bear on Drs. and patients to switch to generics drugs.

Yes, standard contracts do include/exclude line items and limit payments; if you have gotten a statement that says “non-covered charge” you have seen this. I will gladly pay for tests that my doctor recommends, regardless of whether the insurance company or my employer think is necessary. As far as the public option being dead – very few laws are sunsetted, most are expanded, so no public option now, but just wait two years. This is a step process, so be prepared for the next dropoff.

That it will likely come up again. Not to say that it will be more palatable next time either.
