THE TENNESSEAN

When the $787 billion federal stimulus passed earlier this year, it was supposed to be a boon for state road projects.

And while Tennessee received $500 million from the program, the federal government has also rescinded about $250 million that was to be used for future road work, leaving the Tennessee Department of Transportation and road builders in limbo.

That has meant TDOT has had to push back road projects and put its future planning on hold, causing builders to slash their payrolls.

Wonder how many new or saved jobs were reported from this?

The $250 million that was rescinded was not part of the stimulus money.

Rather, since Sept. 30, Tennessee and other states have been operating with a temporary federal highway spending measure after the bill expired in the fall. When that happened, Congress rescinded $8.7 billion to return to 2005 funding levels.

Congress has since failed to pass a new highway bill, instead opting to extend the previous agreement on two separate occasions and promising to work on new legislation in the coming months.

One would assume after Health Reform is completed that Congress will work on the Highway Bill and restore the funding. I hope Cottonman will post when that occurs as it is important that we be fair and balanced.

As you can see, this article came directly from the Tennessean, one of the most left leaning newspapers anywhere. The author leads the reader to believe that the cut was from stimulus funds. If that is not the intention why even mention the stimulus package at all? The rest of the article, past the quote above, says that a TDOT engineer has suggested the state find their own funding by levying additional taxes. So was the stimulus intended to help employment by funding infrastructure construction? Why does giving $500M from one plan but not funding (cutting) $250M from another not just another bait and switch? So we all fund the stimulus, have funds cut from another area, and get stuck paying for improvements from additional taxes. That's not fair and certainly not balanced, especially when we see how our federal tax dollars are spent to buy health care votes.
