Temperature is supposed to drop to around 5 degrees Friday night after being well below freezing all day Friday. Part-timers and even full-timers need to think about shutting off water and draining pipes in preparation for a nasty weekend.

There is also a chance of snow Thursday to complicate matters. Don't forget the cars' antifreeze.

Where are you seeing a low of 5 degrees? Alex City is projected to be 20, Tallassee 19, etc. Yes that's cold, bitter cold, but not single digits.

Your message still holds, though: people need to take precautions.

I recommend automatic heat tape for houses up off the ground (and good insulation).

I just re-checked NOAA and Weather Underground and they are predicting 6 and 5 degrees respectively, for Friday night. WSFA-Montgomery is predicting 12 degrees for Montgomery. Weather Channel is predicting 18--hope they're right. WSFA said that there is a good chance temperatures won't get above freezing from Thursday afternoon through most of Sunday.

Hope Weather Channel is right, but they usually are just slower. Bad things happen when temps go to single digits.

I think it's been at least 20 years since we had a long snap like this one coming. FOX News just said this pattern could last a few weeks! Jezzzz!

Most lake house have pumps for their sprinkler system and a lot are above ground or not protect adequately from the cold and could be a major issue, come spring, if not drained.

Luckily our pump is below ground on a hillside, called my neighbor anyway and asked him if he would to cover the pump with a heavy quilt, insulation, polyethylene or whatever and keeping my fingers crossed. As if we are talking below 30 for an extended period of time anything with water is going to freeze unless below the freeze line and this is not a normal freeze for our area.

This is the global cooling phase which everyone knows is a precursor to Global Warming and the end of civilization as we know it.
