It will be few months before I'm back in the water, but maybe someone can help answer a question for me during the off season. If I read the regulations correctly, as an out-of-state boater (from GA) on Lake Martin I'm supposed to carry my driver's license with me while boating. Do I have this right? Would a copy of my DL be OK? What do others do? Maybe Captain Brooks can weigh in and give us the official viewpoint.

According to past questions about this you must have your DL on you as in driving your car.

This subject has come up numerous times and if I remember correctly

- Must have actual ID, copy will not suffice.

- If out of state boater you do not need an AL boaters licenses as long as you do not boat on Alabama waters more than 30 or so days a year. Cannot remember the actual number of days, but surely one of the GA folks know the answer. Or you might want to do a forum SEARCH, think Marine Police (user name) answered these exact questions last year.

to the marine police response about copies (as Mav stated, they are not allowed) When looking at this thread, the response following this link answers the out of state question.

of your Official Drivers License??
The state of Alabama offers, and encourages Fishermen to go on-line to get a Fishing License,,,,, and,,, PRINT IT to present to the game warden??
If a printed copy is good enough for fishing, why is a copy of a DL not good enough to drive a boat?? Even with a picture included?

We require the original license or duplicate license be carried because, for one, it's what the law requires.

Anyone with a home computer, scanner and printer can alter their license to show the V endorsement whether they've taken the proper steps to be certified or not. I know it's hard to believe, but we do confiscate a few fake IDs/licenses each year on Lake Martin. Modern technology makes it harder and harder to detect these types of offenses.

I think I've heard it mentioned somewhere before that any time you start adding exceptions to any law you begin to lose the ability to enforce it, and when that happens the intent of the law becomes lost in all the confusion.
