Murtha's district was Johnstown, PA where every other bridge or government building was named after him. He definitely represented the worst of earmarking but is by no means alone in that regard. What is ironic is that while much of Pennsylvania recovered from the loss of its industrial base, the Johnstown area never seemed to recover. Apparently he died of complications following gall bladder surgery. You know not the day nor the hour......

The John Murtha we saw over the last few years was not the John Murtha who went to Congress in the 1970's. Nor was he the same Congressman that I knew there in teh mid 80's. Then he was a democrat that most republicans liked.
-I guess the accumulation of power over time effects different people in different ways. And teh political hostilities of teh lastdecade probably also had an effect.

Seems Murtha died from a botched surgery where his bowel was nicked, leaked, and developed a fatal infection. Doesn't speak highly of the surgeon's skill.

I'm sure democrats will speak highly of their fallen comrade, but a review of his political career shows he was a leader of the crooks in Washington. He was in trouble in the upcoming elections and it will be interesting to see how the election goes. Seems his district has not recovered from the de-industiallzation of PA, which may mean many voters are already on the democrat pay roll, welfare.

That's the big question right now. His district went for McCain by 5 pr 6 points so it was leaning Republican in 2008. Lot will depend on who the GOP puts up. If its a NY23 RINO Dems will hold because there will be a Tea Party independent candidate. If its a fiscal conservative that can keep social issues off the radar screen ala Scott Brown it is a good likelihood it will be a GOP pickup. We just need to see who comes up. Word is Rendell is going to call for a special in May to coincide with primaries for November. Smart move money wise because everything will be set up for an election, should be lots of turnout to pick the November candidates and the relatively short timeframe probably benefits the incumbent party. Even with all that, absent some compelling reason to wait it seems a prudent move. All my uneducated opinion.
