Using $18B in funds set aside for nuclear power plant loan guarantees, the administration is proposing to help Southern Co. fund two new nuke plants. I am glad the administration is pushing this although I wish they didn't tie it to their desire to regulate carbon, especially given the ongoing collapse of the global warming argument. In any event, good for them to push for this construction.

Look for environmentalists to try to use the courts to block the new plants. Also wonder what the permitting lead time will be. Maybe the environmental impact statements are already done which is a long, arduous and costly process.

Obama's first intelligent and constructive act! The NPR is already approved, now all that is required is a site specific EIS... depends on the meaning of "all".

Site specific EIS = NIMBY's which is always the challenge. Wonder where they are thinking of putting them?

I believe these are going on the Savannah River below Lake Hartwell. Unfortunately, they'll probably suck the bottom out of Hartwell for nuke cooling downstream. Let's hope it's not the Alabama River.

I couldn't remember the name of the existing site. ATL may not have any water, but it looks like they'll have juice.

While I agree with nuclear power and it is the right direction and applaud Obama for backing .... you have to wonder his motives. It make be the carnon issue as MM pointed out ... but I think it is a way to look past what Iran is doing so he does not have to take action on the basis we are building power plants too and so why do we think their intentions are different.
