It looks fairly good for this time of year from the air, no major brown areas.

you've got to stop flying over here at night. Sandy looks like the Mississippi River during spring floods and has for months. Main channel north has been muddy, but beginning to clear thanks to Lake Harris. But, at least it's water.

Lake Watch volunteers tested 8 sites on the lake yesterday with personnel from Auburn University's Department of Fisheries and got the lowest secchi disk readings (water clarity test method) in many years. In some places (Sandy Creek, Coley Creek, dam forebay) the clarity was even lower than last month which we thought was the worst ever.

The tests are part of an in-depth 1-year water quality study funded by Alabama Power Company as part of the Martin Dam relicensing process. We have one more month of testing to do and hope the study results will be available to the public by early summer.

To Webmaster Bruce: I'll make you a deal. If you post the video of the testing process you took last year, I'll see if the test results can be made available for the Forum. Now that's a deal you can't refuse.

Incidentally, we're currently working on a funding grant to study and determine the sources of sedimentation upstream in the watershed.

Hey Dick. What do think is causing the water clarity issues? Rain? Runoff? Upstream issues? Lake level fluctuations? There certainly is less construction going on this year than in previous years?

Geez, I wish you could delete your own post. I meant to say "What do YOU think.... Fingers get ahead of brain, sorry.

Well, I've seen it a lot worse and compared to other lakes in the south east it looked pretty good Thursday....I must admit I do pay more attention to the Kowaliga area when I'm looking.

AC KT, it's probably a combination of all the items you listed and mostly from upstream. The most likely culprit is land use practices (agriculture and forestry). Last month when we were testing the upper reaches around Camp ASCCA and Coley Creek we discovered what we determined to be a new mud flat sticking up in the middle of the river. We've been aware for several years that sediment was building up in that area but not to the extent we've seen lately. Something seems to be going on upstream and we hope to find out what is is.

If anyone on the Forum lives in the river area between Martin and Harris and has ideas on what's causing the severe sedimentation we're seeing at Martin, please contact me at dbronson@charter.net.

Sandy Creek has been affected by construction of an air strip and a drag strip dirt work. Neither site is properly silt fenced to prevent erosion and we've had problems getting ADEM to help enforce the law. Of course, clear cutting forest doesn't help the situation either.

Where is the air and drag strip construction you refer to

The drag strip is off Agricola Road and you can see the stream and mud flat in Sandy Creek about 100 yds to the east as you cross Hwy 49 bridge. To see the drag strip go out Hwy34 East to the big curve and follow Agricola a few hundred yards north. The air strip is a private strip upstream of Hwy 49--not exactly sure of the location.

I think the air strip is off Barrons Bridge Rd. Go out 34 and turn right on Lockhart Rd. It is about a mile on the right just before you dead end to Barrons Brdg. Rd. You should see the silt that one of the floods last fall was left in front of Fomby's boat rental. They started dredging but the lake came up so fast they did not get to finish.

If that's the case, I'm mistaken about where the airstrip drains. It must drain into Blue Creek instead of Sandy Creek. We had a conversation with a resident of Blue Creek last week who was asking why the creek was so muddy--guess we know now. We're still trying to get action from ADEM on these two upstream sites.

Where is the new mud bar developing up near Asca/Coley Creek? I wasn't able to get out and do more usual winter fishing this year, and see the low water terrain.

Smack, it's located at GPS 32.9206 / -85.8676. Last week when I was up that way doing water quality testing, the mud flat was slightly under the surface. There is so much mud collected in that entire area that we've added it to the list for the Sedimentation Study funded through Alabama Power Company's dam relicensing process.

If you want a map depiction of the spot, email me at dbronson@charter.net.
