I am tired of the insurance companies being demaguoged (sp?) over pre-exixting conditions. They are already REQUIRED to cover them IF the condition/injury has EVER been treated under any other GROUP plan. All one has to do is provide the new carrier with a "certificate of creditable coverage". I have pre-existing conditions and have availled myself of this provision twice in my life.

I will hang my flag upside down this year as I see my country as being in very dire straights. I only wish I had the clout to make this a national movement.

The Certificate one receives when employment is terminated enables one under COBRA to become insured under a new plan with out a pre existing exclusion as long as it is exercised it within 60 days. While you seem to want to congratulate the insurance companies for this coverage, it is mandated by the federal law COBRA. This is the same federal government that you are now having a probLem supporting.

Prior to COBRA, insurance companies were required by state insurance laws to offer a conversion privilege when one left a group plan. The conversion privilege was always expensive and had reduced benefits from the group plan. It was an individual policy that one could keep by paying the premium. The rates were high because most who converted had pre existing conditions. COBRA replaced the conversion privilege.

Who do you think pays for the additional claims as a result of the COBRA benefit covering pre existing conditions? It is added to the premium paid for by the employer and employee.

COBRA is MANDATED by the Federal Government. Trust me, insurance companies only offer COBRA FOR pre existing coverage and continuation of coverage because the federal law requires it. So, maybe you need to hang your head down for your access to a federally mandated plan called COBRA. Or, maybe since it benefits you it is acceptable.

You see GF, you made my point. It IS mandated already so why all the demaguogoing of the insurance companies. And you are wrong about the time frame. This 'right' that is already mandated can be excorsized at any time, not just within 60 days. I once went from group plan, to individual plan for 1.5 years, then onto another group plan after nearly two years. Once I provided the certificate ( which is actually just a letter stating coverage dates ) my conditions were automatically covered.

Approximately only 6% of plans are individual, the rest are group plans. So why all this screaming about pre-exixting conditions? The imperial federal guvment has already MANDATED that they be covered. So rather than spend a TRILLION dollars on a totally new 'system', why not just educate the public about how to stay covered now.

But what say you about the fact that a person with pre-existing conditions could even get an idividual plan? The PC's were excluded from coverage for one year, but the policy was issued.

AND BTW- the questions are rhetorical.
