I didn't realize Ben Stein is a right winger. I've lost a little respect for him now that I know he writes for the AS rag.

But that aside, I think he makes a good point. I'm in favor of health care reform, but I don't care for the tactics and circumstances under which we got it. In fact, I'm appalled.
I'm also appalled that some of the protesters screamed out racial epitats, spit on legislators, and in general, acted like irresponsible and irrational citizens. I don't care that they protested -- in fact I think they should, but there are rules of civilized people even in protest. I'm waiting for the day someone decides to shoot. We reached a new low yesterday.

From Red State, Sunday

Numerous news media outlets have reported that certain members of the CBC were insulted with racial epithets during the course of protesting yesterday. The specific accusation most often repeated is that when Andre Carson (D-IN) and John Lewis (D-Ga) left the Cannon House Office Building yesterday, they were met with a crowd that chanted the “n-word” at them repeatedly. Frank J. had an excellent rundown of all the media outlets who credulously reported the word of these lying race pimps despite the total absence of any video or audio evidence to the contrary.

It turns out, it’s not just that there’s a lack of evidence that this ever happened, there’s actually video evidence of the scene in question which absolutely proves that Carson and Lewis are full of crap:

I don’t know if these two idiots are just unaware that protesters and activists tend to carry video cameras everywhere they go now in order to catch news as it happens, or if (more likely) they just figured that their completely fabricated story fit a pre-existing narrative the media would be happy to credulously pass on. The sad thing is that it appears to have worked. I won’t hold my breath for all the media who slandered the Tea Party protesters to retract and publicly these two out for the liars they are, though.

Really, it’s sad in a way. Racism still does exist in this country, but political crooks like Carson and Lewis have turned the owrd into a joke for the sake of their own political gain. Well done, fellas - way to serve the cause.

Hound,

I am surprised by your comment on Ben Stien.

I am equally surprised by your comment on the reaction of people. While I am not endorsing their action .... law makers are suppose to represent the people and the people did not want this forced down their throat or the back room chicago style deal making at the expense of the american people. The law makers showed no respect for the american people ... so you had a group of angry americans showing no respect for law makers.

We (well most of us) can only hope that this proves to be unconstitutional. I was talking to a friend that I would say is very knowledgable on constitutional law and she feels that there are several arguments that are valid where the supreme court could strike this down. Personally I hope so and it would be a wake up call for Obama that we do have separation of powers and it is a way for the supreme court to put it to Obama after his comment in the State of the Union address.

In saying that, the supreme court does not always interpret the constitution the same ... but you do have a fairly good balance of appointees sitting right now.

It should be interesting and I hope the american people do not forget this abuse of power and disreguard for the constitution and the wishes of the american people they are suppose to represent in November.

As for being in favor of Health Care reform ... I am as well ... but we are are talking a very small percentage of people that need healthcare and can not get it. There are other ways to address the problem without a government takeover. The government has NEVER run a social program successfully.

You can not add 32 million people without adding more doctors nurses, facilities without there being bottlenecks and rationing. Oh and while you decide to limit what a doctor can charge ... that will really drive more talented people in to the profession ... especially when the US has the most strict educational requiresments and intern period than any other country. That is part of why the US system was superior than any other country .... so are we now going to lower the standards to get more in to the profession as the most talented choose other fields?

I am sure some go in to medicine for the love ... but we are (where) a capitalist society and many went in to it for the money. Especially some of the specialty fields.

Hound, Ben Stein has always been a social and fiscal conservative. He's pretty funny too. As for the American Spectator I don't read it and wonder how much you do? I prefer National Review, American Thinker, Heritage, etc.

Hound

What are your thoughts on the treatment received by Ann Coulter at the University of Ottawa?

Since I don't know how she was treated, I don't have any thoughts.

But, I will tell you that I am in favor of respect and civility.

WW, I thought I responded to your post, but I guess something happened that I never pushed the submit button.

I'm not a lawyer, so I don't know about the Constitutionality of the Health Care situation. A lot of lawyers seem to think a case can be made, so we'll see where that goes.

All of the Drs. and nurses I have talked to in the last year have been in favor of some kind of health care reform. Yes, I actually ask my Drs. these things - not because of politics, but I figure that people who work in healthcare generally know whether or not there is a problem -- much more than the rest of us.
And I would imagine that there will be challenges in implementing almost anything anyone comes up with. Even if this law is not ultimately overturned, there will be amendments and probably in 10 years time, it will look quite different.

I am extremely turned off by all the animosity on both sides that surround this issue (and others). Years of experience have taught me that for any one problem, there are multiple approaches that will ultimately get us to where we need to be. I don't think anyone has proprosed a solution that is cost free and complication free. So what would make me happy now is that if both sides could just get on with the refinements and amendments, and stop insulting each other. If these are the people we elected to represent us, and this is how they act, well, what does that say about us? Call me old fashioned, but I think civility and respect have a place, and no, I don't think dignified people should have to throw around the "F" word.

I heard an interesting comment concerning spectators at special events. The commentator stated that in the past it was not unusual for "plants" to be used by Chicago with the intent for the "plants" to incriminate the full crowd in the media by their remarks.

I also heard that there was no video evidence of the racial remarks. Is that true?

If you are a liberal (current definition as opposed to the classical), your choice is between a claque or a plant. It depends on whose rally... or mob... is the subject of the choice.
