just finished chloroxing my 2 year old dock and hopefully got all the mold/algea and red mud stains off of it for a short time. we are looking for a GOOD stain/sealer/protectant that can help protect this wood from the harsh environment of lakeside living. thompsons waterseal is worthlesss. i've used CWF (clear woood finish) and it was so so. any suggestions from you lake dwellers? BTW, catboat is a cool dude that helped me out back last fall. he is for real! listen for the spring peepers and the chuck wills widows. lakeside living is GREAT!!!!

I agree that Thompson is worthless. I did some research once and I think the Behr product was well rated. Either Behr or one that starts with a C, is the one I used. Need to pressure wash and do it again though.

You may be thinking of Cabot. I use Cabot Semi-Solid Oil Based Stain and it lasts about 3 years in the sun. Sounds like you don't want stain and if that's the case I don't know of anything that will last more than 3-6 months. The light stains haven't held up well for me either.

Agree with Cabot. Neighbors from Florida said it is all they used on their docks on the intercoastal. Does come in a clear coat that we used on our Pro-deck. Went with a light stain on docks and haven't been disappointed.

I plan to start re-doing my exterior decking with trex (even the part that is only 3 years old). I've tried Cabots, Sikens, and other top brands, but everything needs to be re-applied every few years. In the long term, I believe a re-do will be easier and less expensive.

BTW, I use trex as a generic term for the material. I am looking at several brands and have not made a decision on which I will use.

The 'trex' material is very dense and thus holds a LOT of heat. One of my neighbors had to keep a hose running on his just to be able to walk on it barefooted. His was a dark color and maybe a light color may be better, but I pulled up to his dock barefoot once. Even I didn't know I could move as quick as I did to get back off of it.

I have trex on my porch and dock. It is the past generation - the new generation with "permanent" color came out about the time I built so I got a "deal" to use the prior generation. We left the dock unfinished and it weathered to a light grey. We used a solid color stain (medium brown) on the porch. The dock is bearable to bare feet but the porch is not.

LOL,,, that is why I took the dark wood floor out of the NC2.... Man what was I thinking!
Dark wood and sunshine don't mix at all.

I considered that and dark stain is also bad for heat. I have dark stain on my wood deck and it can't be walked on with bare feet on a sunny day..... I'm looking for a maintenance free light color.

It's my experience that unshaded wood of any color gets very hot in the summer...two words..flip flops
