My wife has been receiving calls on her ATT cell phone but does not recognize the number so will not answer. I noticed today the number has called 6 times. I decided to do a search of the number and found it is a cell number in Santa Monica CA. I decided to call if from our land phone and use a call block *67 before the call. The call was intercepted by Verizon with the message that the phone number is not a working number. I called again to satisfy myself that I had dialed correctly. I received the same message.

I then called Verizon and was able to eventually reach a representative who said it sounded like spoofing. This was a new one to me. H e explained spoofing is where someone can dial your phone and have ANY number they want appear on called ID.

I then called ATT and they offered her a service to block numbers for $4.95/month or a new number.

He said it is legal as recently the court threw out a Florida law outlawing it as a violation of the Commerce Clause.

What is so scary is anyone can sign up for a plan to Spoof. Someone could call you at 2 AM and have the number that shows on Called ID as your home phone number and say they are downstairs in the kitchen.

I am debating whether to answer the call myself.

Another thing I learned as I checked Spoofing is if you try and block a toll free number when you call it the block does NOT work. The reason is a loop hole that you can not block a call unless you pay for it. A 800 call is at no cost to you.

This is not some email that I received or some Urban myth. This is really happening.

Be careful of these ... they are normally credit card scams. When you answer they tell you they are calling to verify your VISA card for some unusual transactions, but need to first confirm your identity. Now if they are calling you they have already done that ... but many people just start giving them all the info they ask for.

It happened to me recently and I had fun with the woman until she finally hung up.
