We just returned from our vet's office. Had to put down Katie, our hyperactive, scatterbrained, but oh so sweet 13 year old Irish Setter.

She provided us so much unfettered love and companionship....but the cold hard facts are that dogs don't live as long as people, and part of accepting that love and companionship is also accepting that we must bid adieu at some point.

Here's to you Katie girl. We love you and will miss you.

Nasreddin Hodja.

I faced the same in 2008 with our almost 16 year old Lab. I fully understand your loss and my sympathies are with you and your family. It is like losing a member of the family.

I'm so sorry for your loss. Losing an animal is like losing a member of the family. Raising a glass to Katie.

I fully understand your loss. My thoughts and prayers will be with you and Katie today. Cherish the love she gave you. You will always have those memories.

I'm sorry for your loss. A dog can truly become one of your best, most loyal, and cheerished friends. For those that feel this, a dog is not like a member of your family, they are a close member of your family. Losing one can be very hard.

Isn't it strange how something like this makes you think back to that special dog you owned and the loss you feel when they go? My Mom still gets choked with emotion about our house dog Schultz (a mix between a dachshund and a beagle.....) who was 15 or 16 when she had him put down. I grew up with that goofy dog and we loved him and he loved us, especially my Mom. Sorry to hear about Katie....

All dogs go to heaven. I am hoping to spoil mine for one more summer.

I agree, I think there's a special place in heaven for dogs and cats. We have a Siberian Husky(Sasha)and a Black Lab(Molly) that are both 13 years old and beginning to decline. We also have a cat(Beau) that is only 5 or 6. I dread the day when the time comes for them to go but I know it will be sooner than later for the dogs. They always love you and want to give and receive affection. Nothing like the joy and heartache a pet can provide for a family.

Here's to you Katie...........

I truly feel for you. I have a 13 year old that has lost his hearing, balance and, for the most part, his sight. He curls up in my lap every evening and is pretty much totally reliant on me for his well-being. This is the lap dog my wife and children begged for and I was totally against it. Well, you probably guessed it... They totally lost interest within a month and now he is "my" dog. I know his time is coming and I dread that day. Don't know if I will be able to attend the "put down."

You will know when the time has come. The decision is tough and we have had to make it several times, but once it is done you will know it was the right - albeit painful for you - thing to do. \\Miss Katie is now in her final resting place with a couple dog biscuits by her side just in case she wakes up hungry in Heaven...:>)

My heart goes out to you Pal..

"Ginger" "Wicker" (aka 'Sir Barth of Sunset' a CDX line Springer Spaniel) "Heidi, Gordon setter, and a long line of show up on the door step mutts (the last, Daisy Mae, a hound, lab mix) have preceded us and blessed our lives.. We may outlive them, Hodja, but they make us smile long knowing they are chasing bunnies in doggy heaven..
