I just returned from a four day Seniorpalooza on Lake Martin. Six boys, my wife and I spent last week enjoying what our Lake has to offer. We played volleyball, swam the slough (a couple are Ironmen), played basketball, did some tubing and alot of wakeboarding. One small dissapointment, the rope swing is gone. I understand it was a liability issue, too bad. We did jump from the Rock, you can't cut that down I guess. It's a shame that some people need someone to blame, and the bottom-feeding lawyers are happy to assist with the redistribution of wealth. I am hoping to find another rope swing, I am willing to help construct a strong, safe one, if anyone is interested, contact me privately. Looking forward to getting back to the Lake soon.

It is nice to hear you had a wonderful and safe time.

Are you going to build the swing on your property, or do you have the permission from the property owner to do so on their property?

I went to Alabama Power yesterday for a permit. They were cordial but strict in their compliance. One would suspect they would require a permit for any type of devise linking land to water on Lake Martin. Your first step would be to question them before any type of construction. I think your suggestion might requre a permit. Hope this is helpful. There are probably many others who would gladly help with there labor and dollars.

Where do you suggest it be accomplished on the Lake?

Alabama Power's permits seems to include and require applications for piers, floating docks, boat houses, ramps, seawalls, and dredging. I did not see any mention of recreational devises or swings???

they will be throwing snowballs in h3ll before I would apply for a permit to tie a rope to a tree.

I don't see a problem if the tree is on your property. It seems most of the undeveloped lake frontage either belongs to Russell Land or Alabama Power. There was a similar question about camping a few months back on the Forum.

Is there any public property on the lake with a tree you could tie a rope to? I do not know, so I am asking the question.

So dude, it is rather interesting how some folks seem to think they can do as they please on property that is not theirs. I would personally prefer to see you tie a rope to a tree than nail a blasted advertising sign to it.

LMAO. I'm with Kizma....something just ain't right about asking permission to throw a rope in a tree.

jwh, got any good trees over there on your side of the hood? I had a good swing in my yard until '03 (until the tree became too old to handle the load) and I'm waiting for some others to get big enough.

Wouldn't any land that uses public money to maintain it be considered the publics?
DARE Park, Windcreek, etc....
