Before Lake Martin was considered a rich man's paradise, it was considered an average man's vacation spot. A place where people took their boat to get away. People also used to cook on grills while vacationing. If you cannot grasp this concept, I suggest you invest in a grill, spend a few hours watching the Food Network, and quit complaining about the lack of places to go where they wait on you hand and foot to serve you a 2 dollar chicken salad sandwich for 15 dollars. Seriously people. You live on the lake? Great new place to eat is the cabin. If you are lucky you may even get your kids to the table.

If this was facebook ... i would "like" this! I agree! My favorite times growing up were when my family and I would come to the lake for the day. We would spend all afternoon on the lake and stop on an island to grill out and then get back on the water. Those "island" burgers and dogs my dad used to make were the best things on earth! Now, my family is blessed to have a place up on the lake but the days of trying to find a place to camp for the afternoon are gone and the burgers just don't taste the same. I'm not complaining, but I always loved those afternoons on random lake beaches. :)

I agree 100%. We had guest to come in Friday and we took an hour boat ride to Sinclairs for lunch. We were the first ones there at 11am. It took 65 min. to get our food. That was their third strike for me, they won't get another $ from me.
For what we paid for lunch, I could have grilled multiple meals. Lesson learned.

do grill and cook at home often. Every now and then a place will open that has all of the qualities that we look for (good food, good service, fair price). For whatever reason these places do not survive unless at least one of those qualities, often more than one, goes south. We keep returning hoping that they will change but they seem to get the attitude that we are lucky to have them at the lake. When this happens they get scratched from the list and we buy more hardwood charcoal for the EGG.

I tend to agree with you. As if living on the lake isn't good enough... I kinda wonder about it when people talk about wanting things that they moved away from, either in Birmingham or Atlanta. If you miss things like Trader Joes (or whatever it is named) or the like. Then it sounds like it is time to move back to the city. I am NOT saying there shouldn't be good places to eat. But you can't expect The Ritz Carlton in Eclectic! I remember a few of the same things... grilling out on Sand Island, the best hot dogs ever came off of the grill there! Eating at Cotton's for lunch and getting some extra to go for that evening. Going to Eclectic for some frozen yogurt when it was really hot... no A/C! And of course... just enjoying the cool water on a hot afternoon.
Some people will never be happy no matter where they are. They will always what something bigger and better.

if there wasn't a restaurant for 50 miles, I'd still be happy and content. My wife and I love to cook; we are quite capable of complexity in the kitchen, and the BGE doesn't get lonely. That said, it is nice to have places available when you want to get out of the house. I'm thankful for places that are available, and for us there are more than enough decent choices to suit our needs.

intended, but I would love it if a Trader Joe's moved here. Or even a really decent supermarket. Even if you are going to cook out, you need to have access to good ingredients. I enjoy "complex" (and simple) cooking as much as anyone, but cobbling together the ingredients from the stores available here, gets to be a bit of a bore. Of course, when you primarily live in Atlanta, you can bring provisions with you.
I don't think anyone is expecting the Ritz Carlton in Eclectic. But, if you have ever tried to get a last minute reservation at Spring House on the weekend (you can't), you would know that there must be an audience for a few upscale restaurants.
Now, I know some of you will say that if you can't wear shorts and flip flops you are not interested -- and that's fine for you. There are plenty of places to accomodate you.
But, those of us who live here full time would enjoy a few more "trappings" of civilization. Instead, I make the trek to Montgomery at least once a week, and B'ham at least once a month for signs of civilization. I can't even find a good quality dog food that isn't loaded with "meat by-products" here. Luckily, my dogs love going to Montgomery to Petco.

Many of us moved here to get AWAY from the kinds of "civilization" that we endured in places like Birmingham, Atlanta and Montgomery. And sure enough, we were followed by those of you who not only couldn't bear to "get away from it all," but insisted on bringing it all with you. Why you had to leave but bring it all with you instead of just staying where you were is confusing, but I've always thought it had something to do with status.

Atlanta, Birmingham and Montgomery are not really civilization. Try something a little larger and in more sophisticated parts of the country. Like LA, NY, Chicago or even HOuston.
And what is wrong with wanting to leave traffic and polution, etc. behind and still have ammenities and decent service and food served by a waitstaff with a good attitude instead of a chip on each shoulder because the customer has more money and better stuff than the server.
What's wrong with wanting the best of both worlds.
And why does Catherine's market only bake 3 danish pastry's every day and charge $.25 for tap water with your meal? While the staff exhibit a terrible attidude?
Why are so many of the born and raised locals always on the rag?
Why can you get good service on your boat at a reasonable price by people who appreciate the business (@ Cathouse) but not here at the lake by the local guys?

was that all about? I don't think TH wants Trader Joes in Dadeville but it will be nice having a Publix in Auburn. Nothing wrong with patronizing well run, stocked businesses. Why is that mutually exclusive with enjoying the lake? I don't think anyone seriously thinks these stores will located at the lake. Demographics just won't support it.

I do live here full time, and so did my parents, who moved here when I was very young. If you subtract the years I was away at college and the time it took me to make enough to move back here, I have been living on the lake for more than 50 years. You? If you have been here less than that, then YOU stop telling ME how things should be. Using your logic that would only be fair, right?

They could probably make a few good "Seinfeld goes to Lake Martin" episodes on those questions and ideas....and I totally agree. Next question, Why are people arguing about this stuff...It's warm, the lake is full, and it's Saturday; Party on!

Actually, I would very much like a Publix in Alex City. The Winn Dixie and the Piggly Wiggly are totally inadequate. But, I doubt that will happen. Most people in Alex City seem to shop at Walmart.
Sadly, you are right that the demographics won't support a Whole Foods or a Trader Joes. Catherine's was just barely hanging on all winter. I have high hopes that as Russell develops the 63 corridor, we might actually see some more businesses. They seem to recognize that if AC is going to survive, it needs something to attract people and a reason for them to spend their money here.

As long as the year for so many business' is three months, it is very hard to invest in doing more. Waite staff is not a trained staff, mostly fill ins for a few months. Lots of reasons why we have what we have. I take it with a grain of salt if something isn't quite what I'd like it to be. So what? I live here full time and have a lot to be grateful for. My choice, my area I prefer to live in, so I chose to be quite content and appreciate it when things get better as time goes on.

will change until we have a larger, permanent lake population. LM has not reached a "tipping point" of permanents like Lanier did in the 80's.
The locals hope it never will. If Russell wants that it will have to get more agressive about infrastructure development and I don't see that happening. The Russell efforts to create a supporting infrastructure have been way too tenative.
Maybe more important in that this is a small town where most folks really like the way it is. This includes the lake being full of second homers where folks spend money and then go home. Nothing wrong with that but you really can't have your cake and eat it too. Check out the unemployment rate. The community has a divided mind and that is the biggest part of the problem with growth. No growth-no stable economy.
