It's that time of year again. We will try to post weekend activity here on Mondays or as soon as possible. As a reminder, if you need a Marine Police officer and it is not an emergency, call your local sheriff's department or state trooper post (Alex City or Montgomery). Of course, if it is an emergency call 911. I hope everyone has a safe and enjoyable summer.

How can I find out if my vessel exceeds 86 decibels?

Matt:

Have always thought it would be a great service to the local boaters if there was someway to have a informal check at the beginning of each season to ensure your vessel is in compliance.

A lot of folks do not realize for example a throwable is required and that if vessel is less than 24' a kill switch is required, a copy of your Vessel license is not acceptable, etc etc. You know the what I mean they have the basics down, but not the finite details.

Could one just pull up to one of your Officers and ask them if they would do a informal check, without the risk of being ticketed? Think this would be a great service especially to the young and even the novice boaters as most want to comply but have just missed some of the finer details. Maybe even provide them with a written checklist they can retain for future reference.

Thanks for everything you guys and gals do in keeping our waterways safe!!!

Call the district office at 256-329-2268 to arrange a test.

We were getting ready for our Maiden salt water journey on PP, still attached to the dock, never had started the engines, and the Coast Guard Auxiliary boarded and asked if I wanted to submit to a safety review. Of course this was a good time to be inspected, since any violation would be overlooked (since we had not left the dock). It was an eye opener for sure. It was a good thing. Maybe you should start a Power Squadron auxiliary at Lake Martin, and have people volunteer these at marinas and boat launches. See the following sites for details…

Mav,

We do these "courtesy checks" quite often. People come up at a marina or boat ramp and ask us to check their boat and we do. There is no problem with that.

Here is a link to an Alabama boating equipment checklist. It has a downloadable pdf file for future reference.

What "Opened my eyes" was that we were being offered an inspection before we ever even started the engines. Honestly I had other things going on and it caught me off guard. I had just towed my boat and wasn't sure everything was in sound order. I was asked to show that everything was in working order not that I had doubts, but a couple hundred miles of bouncing around on the highway could have knocked anything lose... Thankfully, everything checked was good to go.

Things that were asked which were unexpected was an alternate signaling device (I had flares) - Was advised that Compact Disks(CDs) make great "Alternate Signaling Devices". Also, alternate de-watering device. I do not have a manual pump, but I do have a trash can. I also did not have a trash/dumping sticker. After discussing with the Gentleman, I placed it on the inner side of my access pannel in the head (where the TP goes). Hope this high traffic area location can be sold to the next person doing my inspection.

Interesting....so it doesn't sound like it was a voluntary deal. At least you know what they are looking for and it sounds like you're up to snuff....Did the citation you for anything?

Thanks Mav, the maiden voyage was great. The kids love going to crab island. Now we just hope the oil stays away.
