As someone who will, in all probability, be directly impacted within the near furure by the oil spill I try to follow the changes on a daily basis. NOAA recently launched an excellent online mapping tool to help keep track of the oil spill response. Called ERMA (Environmental Response Management Application), it was originally intended for federal, state and local responders but has recently been released to the public. For those interested, you can view it at the URL below. It is an excellent site to bookmark to see the daily change.

One important point as you look at this map.  The oil is not uniformly distributed across the entire area.  It is actually found in strings.  In between the strings there is basically unaffected water, other than as you are closer to the source there is dissolved phase that you can't see.  When we did our sampling we would go through large unaffected areas until we hit the strings of oil and could obtain a sample.

NOAA is doing a very good job mapping the extent of the release but people will be confused if they are within the footprint but can see no oil.
