That there is an unusually large number of handicaped tags in Tallapoosa CO? The occupancy of the parking spaces is usually high too... The average age for the county is only 3 years older than the US. ????

I've noticed it. Funny too, because a handicap sticker is relatively hard to get.
Feb made inquiries about a temporary handicapped sticker when he was recovering from surgery, and it was a no go.
I have noticed here that almost all of the handicapped parking places are taken (particularly at Walmart and the grocery store) but in other places they are usually mostly vacant.

I've noticed the same ... and have seen many that use them where, well, a walk may do them some good. It may be too much fried food and a doctor gives it to them, or could be a friend of a friend that gets them one (no way to tell if they are real). I do not want to judge, since if they need one they should have one, but I hate to see all the spots taken if they are not needed or on the up and up, then someone that really does has to be the one put out.
Maybe a few random checks if they also do not have a tag on their vehicle that is handicap. The hanging card from the mirror are suspicious since they are normally issued on a temporary basis by doctors and can easily be reproduced.

What gets me is to see numerous handicapped spaces at Golds Gym, World Gym, etc. I first noticed this in Morrow GA. I was sitting in the car waiting for a shower to end before going in to a store. I was overlooking the Golds Gym lot and noticed they had 8-10 handicapped spaces. But the real kicker was that HALF of them were in use!! I watched several folks come and go while I was there. They all looked healthier than me. A couple of the young ladies that parked there and got out were in exceptional shape, err I mean health... :<)

While I haven't noticed a larger than normal number in Tallapoosa County I have noticed on a regular basis people that appear to be completely healthy having stickers and parking in the handicapped spot. I suspect the car is registered to someone that has a legitimate need and anyone that uses it thinks it gives them the right to park there. I don't believe it is legally correct but more importantly is just not right. Of course I also think its ridiculous how many handicapped spaces the big retailers have vis-a-vis their actual use but what can you do.
As for me, I plan to do some research on the misuse of handicapped spaces at all Gold's Gyms int he Atlanta area starting in Buckhead. I would appreciate not discussing this research with my wife until my peer reviewed paper appears in the New England Journal of Medicine or other esteemed journal.

I had a friend one time that was wheelchair bound due to childhood polio. I never realized just how important handicapped spots are to those who need them until I traveled around with her. It's impossible to open a car door wide enough to also get your wheelchair out of the back, if you are not in a handicapped spot.
When my friend would see someone pull into handicapped space who appeared to be able-bodied, she was known to yell out the window "Those spaces are for the physically handicapped, not the mentally hancdicapped". She was a great person and nothing slowed her down -- and she never took advantage of her handicap.

When my kids would say, Gee they don't look very handicapped I would say they are mentally handicapped. She sounds like a great lady. My oldest brother is a quad but doesn't get out much because of bed sores and he is so tall not many handicapped vehicles fit him. Those in wheelchairs really do need the extra space more than being close to the door.

Why do I sense the title of the "other esteemed journal" will be The Lake Martin Forum????????? It may be that the handicapped are in Gold's for physical therapy. I am going to notice the number of spaces next time I am in their parking lot.
If I see a large number, I'll ask the Manager.

GF, you'll just have to wait until I complete my research to get the details. As for the forum being another option, I will certainly consider it although I am not sure it is what I had in mind when I mentioned peer reviewed. Hope you have a nice 4th as well. I plan to be as far from the rock on Sunday as possible enjoying the peace and quiet. Looks like the weather is going to be spectacular.

forget researching why business have special parking for expectant mothers. I would think the excercise would do them good... The little darlings....
