The following: Your site uses aliases and by clicking on the LIKE button you provide your real identity, if you have a FB account. Not sure what happens when you click the like button and do not have a FB account, I assume nothing. Like Button would be great if at end of each thread line it might state something like - # Like and # Dislikes (Sort of like reviews) Something like: The Unlike Button - lakngulf - 7/19/2010 9:59:48 PM -- 3 Likes The Unlike Button - Casey - 7/20/2010 8:59:07 PM -- 5 Likes & 12 Dislikes The Unlike Button - roswellric - 7/20/2010 9:35:56 PM The Unlike Button - roswellric - 7/20/2010 9:37:37 PM The Unlike Button - Webmaster - 7/20/2010 11:26:23 PM -- 4 Dislikes

My dislike has to do with speed.  I bring up a post, get ready to read or reply, and poof it has to refresh to give me the Like button.  It is no problem if my internet connection is blazing, but sometimes takes at least .25 seconds to re-display.  Seriously, it is just something that I do not use.  If I like something enough then I will make a comment.

The Facebook Connect API was easy to implement (a couple of hours). A localized "Like" implementation would have cost about $1,000 to develop and implement and would not have had he advantage of showing on Facebook News Feeds. If you folks don't like it, well, I guess you can just not "Like" it. I do see that it brings in traffic from Facebook that we would not have gotten otherwise. It makes member's friends aware of a forum that they may not know about, whether they participate or not.

There is nothing that ties a "Like" to a forum member alias. I suppose it may be shocking to read full names on the forum and see photos, but the name and profile photo only shows to people that are your Facebook friend. So when you see that it says "Bruce Pate and 3 others like this", that means that I am your friend and the three others that like it are not your Facebook friend (so you don't know who they are). The only thing I can think of that may not be desired is if you wanted to hide your participation on this site to your friends, in which case you wouldn't be clicking a Facebook button.

As for the suggested display of totals, that functionality is not included in the Facebook API. Bascially, the "Like" is tied to the specific URL of the post. We should put a "Like" button on the "View Entire Thread" page too but that is a different URL, so we could not add the "like" totals for a thread including the individual post page "likes".

If someone does not have a Facebook account, what happens is that they go to the Facebook site and they have the option of creating a Facebook account. That is the trade-off, and one of many clever ways Facebook has acquired a half billion active users. I can say years ago I had similar ideas for a site like Facebook that centralized on cities, but my experience with this forum (people wanting to use aliases) made me think that such a thing would never be widely accepted. The mass buy-in of the "Friend" concept and blocking personal content from the public is what made Facebook successful. But they never could have pulled that off without publicizing people's real names and faces.

Now, I think I'm more confused than I've probably made you.

Now there is a secondary implementation that can be done that doesn't call the Facebook Libraries internal to the page. It loads independent of this site. It may take just as long to load that section, however it will not give the forum page the appearance that it is still loading. What you speak of is the appearance of the "Like" section after the page loads and appears to move the bottom forum operation menu buttons down.

I'll do some testing on the new implementation and see if that improves it.

.25 seconds? Them maters must be taking way too much time if you can't spare an extra .25 seconds (BUT THEY SURE ARE GOOD)!  I like the like, but I guess everything has a down side. If it gets Bruce more traffic, I'm all for it. We'll probably see you this weekend if you're around.

Nope I got it, call me if you want me to explain it to you - LOL. Most folks do not realize that the only way to make money on FREE websites / forums is to drive traffic to the website as their business model is based on advertising and being able to show current and future client's the statistics surrounding daily visitors, conversion rates, etc. So I totally understand the FB link and think it makes great business sense, as the more you can get folks to click on the LIKE button the greater the potential to drive traffic to the website and traffic equates to revenues. Pretty simple business model in that - Invest in upgrades if such will drive additional traffic to the website. And Oh yea all the edit, delete, spell ck, alignment, photos etc etc does not drive traffic to the website (Revenue), but Bruce we appreciate you doing such and listening to all our moaning and groaning, bickering, personal attacks, calls to ban folks from the site, just make sure to have at least 12 cases of beer on your boat during Aquapalooza just to remind how appreciative we are of this fine informative website.

And as long as it's your forum, you should run it however you like! I certainly can appreciated the desire to increase traffic and awareness. I can show you guys a couple forums that are run much, much more firmly (i.e. with an iron and ever-raised fist!) by the admins and owners and they work perfectly for the folks that are willing to play by the few simple rules. Many are smited of course! Thanks to Bruce once again for a terrific forum for all of us to enjoy. BTW - I get that the OP was merely making an observation, not criticizing the forum owner......

You are right, the OP was not PO'd with the Webmaster.  Just expressing an opinion about the Like button.
