Just fishing for a better way to keep potted plants and vegetables watered while we are not at the Lake for a while. Especially now, with 100*  days, it doesn't take long to crispy crunch tomatoes or deck plants.
I pump water from the lake for the lawn sprinkler system with a timer. A couple of spigots off the sprinkler system feed a drip watering system for the potted plants and garden veggies. That is working OK, but I wonder if somebody has a better idea??

Soaker hose for the garden - you know those hoses that have the holes in them and lays flat on the ground. Would suspect they would yield more water than the drip hoses. Our garden is watered by the sprinkler system (soaker heads) on Mon, Wed & Fri for 30 minutes each day and have to say on some of these 100* days in the afternoon all the signs of watering are long gone. But garden keeps on producing and has been fine. On the potted plants have no clue, as we finally just gave up on them after 5 years of trying, as we are not at the lake enough to ensure they are adequately watered.

... broken, don't fix it. Sounds like what you have is working. How can you improve on that.

I mulch around the base of my plants. If you don't have any compost you can use grass clippings or leaves. If you do leaves you might have to step up the fish emulsion for nitrogen. Try Miss Faye for suggestions too.

I get a garden catalog and they specialize in "sel-watering" containers for plants.  They have a resevoir that will take care of the plants for a week. They sell containers or the internal workings so you can use your own pots.  I use a drip system off the sprinkler system so I have not tried this.  I think it is Gardeners Supply.

Rain dance each time you depart?

:>)

Not having anything worth keeping alive other than the rocks littering our yard, I am envious of your quandary.

So far this year I have been around often enough to keep mine watered. That works since I live here.  When I am gone for a few days I do have the garden on an irrigation zone.  Currently, I have two large sprayers and some pop ups.  My plan is to use soaker hoses throughout the garden next year.  That will take more work each year to get it in place, but I understand that top down watering causes more of the disesases.

Still I do not believe you can beat good ol' green hose pipe watering directly to the base of the plant:  early in the morning with a cup of coffee in one hand.  Still better a half inch to an inch of a summer shower......Hey, did God not get the memo on the dangers of top-down watering?
