I read the thread below about water quality and winter water levels.   Does the preponderance of the scientific evidence show that higher winter pool levels would result in poorer water quality?  Or did someone pull the flush theory out of their Wazoo?

No, not from the wazoo, but from the Dadeville Record article on the Lake Martin.com home page:

"We’re talking about a much larger lake if we go with the proposed change,” said Dr. David Bayne, professor emeritus at Auburn University. “The lake is going to be deeper, have more surface area and more volume and there are consequences to that.”

The members of the panel identified multiple problems that could result from the changes.

Bayne said a change in water level could move the transition zone, where the Tallapoosa River becomes Lake Martin, upstream.

“The reason that’s important is you get a lot of sedimentation in the transition zone,” he said.

Sedimentation could increase throughout the lake if the water level is increased, according to Jim Ruane of Reservoir Environmental Management Inc. That increased sedimentation would lead to eutrophication, which is a build-up of plant nutrients in the water.

While Lake Martin is an exceptionally clean lake, eutrophication could cause algae or weed growth in some areas of the lake."

Hold on there, Hodja; are you trying to use FACTS and SCIENTIFIC EVALUATION in a lakemartin.com debate? I don't think either one is allowed here.

Try using wild-@ss guessing and uneduacted speculation instead.

From the same Dadeville Record article:

“The panel members agreed that changes to the current rule curve are possible with little to moderate negative environmental impact, although they were hesitant about the later fall drawdown. Whatever changes are made, the panel agreed that careful monitoring should be conducted for several years after the new license takes effect in 2013. The members also said an “exit plan” should be available, in case the changes have a significant impact.”

I attended the meeting and wrote the article for the Outlook and the Record. It was a good meeting – very positive and laid-back. From a water quality standpoint, the panel members seemed to be in agreement that lowering the water level is a possibility. However, other factors must be considered in the proposed water level changes, including but not limited to recreation, economics, erosion and downstream flooding.

Hope this helps.

a retired professor from a cow college was quoted in a weekly fishwrap or bird cage liner saying it might cause something.

After hearing all of the tales of gloom and doom from the BP fiasco,  and now they can't find any oil, it makes one wonder if the environment is  as  fragile as some would have us believe.

A GUY JUST SAYING SOMETHING DOESN'T MAKE IT SO.

WHERE IS THE EMPIRICAL EVIDENCE??????????????

You will have the evidence only after they make the change. Anything else is educated speculation. You willing to make the change and wait for the results and then blame them for ruining the lake?

Not sure what your problem is.  You won't get your desired reaction because to me you are nothing more than an anonymous set of hands and differing opinion using a keyboard out in the ether somewhere.  Nothing more.

There is no empirical evidence regarding water quality because raising the winter level hasn't been tried yet.  I have no problem with a trial period to see if raising the winter level has any adverse effects on water quality.   On the other hand maybe you should consider and admit that it just might do just that.

I am not saying it will cause problems, and I am not saying it won't cause problems.  I am asking if anyone has any evidence that it will cause problems.  I am asking this because many posters stated that they would rather have clean water than high winter pool levels.

That is tantamount to saying it is hotter in August than it  is in the desert.
Unless tere is evidence

I can't speak for others, but all I am saying (without needing evidence) is that if I had to choose between the two I would choose water quality over higher winter pool.

If you don't care about the size of the lake,  then why not just move to town and fill up your bath tub or get a pool.   Then you can control the water quality.

AND SHOUTING AT YOU SO YOU MIGHT FINALLY GET IT.   WITHOUT EVIDENCE,  YOU DON'T KNOW IF YOU HAVE TO CHOOSE.  YOU MIGHT BE ABLE TO HAVE BOTH, OR MAYBE HIGHER LEVELS MEANS BETTER QUALITY.  YOU CAN'T JUST PULL TWO OPTIONS OUT OF YOUR WAZOO AND DECLARE THEM MUTUALLY EXCLUSIVE OR EVEN INVERSELY PROPORTIONAL.

YOU MIGHT WANT TO VISIT THE WIZARD!!!

Again, I will not respond in kind, but if someone wants to read all my posts on this matter they will probably decide that you are the one with the problem, not I.

You are actually making this fun.

"If you don't care about the size of the lake"

Gee, I don't think anyone suggested that the size of the lake be changed.

"then why not just move to town and fill up your bath tub or get a pool"

The bathtub is irrelevant and I already live in town and have a pool.

"Then you can control the water quality."

We can agree on that, to the point that Buddy Morgan does his job.

"AND SHOUTING AT YOU SO YOU MIGHT FINALLY GET IT. "

I don't have anything to get.  You are the one who doesn't seem to understand.

"WITHOUT EVIDENCE,  YOU DON'T KNOW IF YOU HAVE TO CHOOSE"

Please quote one of my posts where I said I had to choose without evidence.

"YOU MIGHT BE ABLE TO HAVE BOTH"

Again, we agree.

"OR MAYBE HIGHER LEVELS MEANS BETTER QUALITY"

Might be, but we haven't tried it yet, now have we?

"YOU CAN'T JUST PULL TWO OPTIONS OUT OF YOUR WAZOO AND DECLARE THEM MUTUALLY EXCLUSIVE OR EVEN INVERSELY PROPORTIONAL."

Didn't do that so what's your fuss?  You dreaming again?

"YOU MIGHT WANT TO VISIT THE WIZARD!!! "

You might want to stop smoking those funny smelling cigarettes.

Still no reason to visit any "wizard" - or to shout.  Read all my posts.  Maybe you need some anger management along with staying away from those cigarettes.

Ah, devoid of logic, reason, and substance revert to insults and attacks.  Brilliant.
