Just seems to me that if Islam is the religion of peace and harmony that the Muslims would have us believe, they would respect the wishes of those who lost loved ones on 9/11 - and indeed a majority of the country - by finding a less controversial site for their mosque.  We have heard plenty of reasons to find another site, but few reasons why it must be in that particular location.

Do we have any Muslim posters out there who can enlighten us?

agreed ... it is hurtful to the families whether they have the "legal" right or not.   There are plenty of cases of businesses wanting to add a location to an area and they are legally sound in building it there, but do to public outcry over traffic, impact on property values, truck traffic, noise and many other reasons ... the business listens and finds a different location even though they could push and be on solid legal ground.

Why should this be different?   Obama is a bozo to speak out on the issue from a legal standpoint when he knows the emotional side on the people of NY and those that lost loved ones and families destroyed.  Now he is back peddling.

We know both he and his wife gave up their right to practice law ... his wife was because she was going to be disbarred and elected to voluntarily give up her license and that she would never practice again.  The reason has been kept under lock and key in Illinois.  For the great pretender, it is not as clear, but there could be a cover up on him.

the only rationale thing is find a different place to build your mosque, far away from ground zero.

Uh-huh. And also ask why they won't let a Christian Church go up in their country but we are supposed to be "tolerant" in ours. This moral relevance and tolerance thing has to go. Problem is it's embedded in the schools and the parents aren't concerned.

First of all, it was originally named Cordova (or Cordoba) which is a city in South Spain where Muslims armies entered the country in 711.  As is Islam's usual modus operandi, they conquered Spain from that starting point and killed tons of Christians in the process. They also converted the biggest church in Cordova into a mosque and made it Islam's center of power in West Europe.

Secondly, the Imam in charge of the project is either tied to radical Islam or is at least sympathetic.  When pressed to say whether Hamas was a terrorist organization he refused to answer the question.  So he is either afraid of being killed or is sympathetic.   See the quote below:

In 2004, Rauf published a book calling it "What is Right with Islam is What is Right with America." In that book, he argued:  The American political structure is Sharia compliant. For America to score even higher on the 'Islamic' or 'Sharia compliance' scale, America would need to do two things. Invite the voices of all religions in shaping the nations’ practical life, and allow religious communities more leeway to judge among themselves according to their own laws.

He also said “We [Americans] have been an accessory to a lot of innocent lives dying in the world. In fact, in the most direct sense, Osama bin Laden was made in the USA.

Thirdly, he lied to the commission that approved the project.  He does not own the building and in fact has a long-term lease.

Finally, where is the $100 million coming from?  He won't say but I can assure you it will mostly come from places like Saudi Arabia and Iran where surprise, surprise, no places of worship other than mosques are allowed.

Screw tolerance toward this religion of evil and hatred.  They can build their project somewhere else although I would be willing to bet if he can't get the symbolic value of putting it at the WTC site his foreign support will dry up.

So in the eyes of the Prez - the Founders of this country wanted freedom of religion and gave us the 1st amendment - OK, I agree. They also gave us the 2nd and 10th amendments, but since those don't go the "left way", his administration does not want to give them any acknowledgement. From what he says, since zoning laws limit the locations of houses of worship - are they unconstitutional?

I can't buy the notion that the building of the mosque overlooking Ground Zero is tied to "freedom of religion". No one is saying that they can't build a mosque, just that the majority of people don't want it built on that particular site. One would hope that they would understand and willingly pick another site. But no. And the whole basis of building it is supposed to promote understanding of Islam.... I'm a little tired at this point, of having the virtues and understanding and being sensitive to the feeling of Muslims. On the whole I don't condemn them as a group, but I have no particular desire to embrace them either. I've had lots of exposure to Muslim countries, Muslim people and the Quoran, but I can't forget 9/11 and the way that their people danced in the street in Pakistan, Saudi and various other Muslim countries, while American families were putting up posters looking for their loved ones.

I wonder if the building trades in New York and the unions will boycott and refuse to build the mosque?

If they did, i would have more respect for unions.  But since obama is their biggest supporter I doubt it.   But there could be mistakes made in construction that unfortunately would cause problems later ... maybe even a collapse.  As horrible as that would be.

Even Harry Ried is turning on obama and speaking out ... actually say president obama is wrong on this issue.  My God, politicians will say and turn on anyone to get reelected.

If the rhetoric would be the same if the Klan wanted to build a church there....

I have heard similar questions in the media.  Its hard to say whether they would or not.  NYC is a very heavy union town when it comes to construction.  Given the economy there would certainly be a lot of pressure to take the work but 911 has significant meaning to New Yorkers.

Apparently a lot of left-leaning Muslims are also coming out in opposition for fear it would be a lightning rod for anti-Muslim sentiment which I certainly think is a valid concern.  I am still mystified by OCarter's ill advised, politically tone deaf and unequivocal support for this awful project.  He is just not up to the job he has.....a true man-child.
