We have a homing pigeon in our yard with a yellow band around his leg.  We took him off yesterday to a safe place due to the fact we have a outside cat.  This morning the pigeon came back!  Does anyone know or have information on homing pigeons in this area.  We are across from Bama Park.

McGill, or Lil Talisi, is this some kind of new scheme you have cooked up to get up to date predictions for the BigFoot palooza pool?  The pigeon seems to be in line with your predictions.....off course.

I also have a homing pigeon story.  About 4 summers ago, a banded homing pigeon showed up here.  He seemed to be very friendly and I started feeding him (perhaps I should not have??)..we seemed to develop a special bond...I started calling him Homie...he eventually let me pick him up and I got the info off the band on his leg.  There was a number to call in California...so I called the number and gave them other id info from his band and they gave me a phone number for a guy in Wetumpka, AL...I called that guy and told him that one of his birds was homesteading here and if he wanted him, I would help.  He said that he did not care to have the bird back so Homie just became my pet bird...when I went out on the pontoon boat, Homie would fly above and circle my boat on my return home.  I really enjoyed the bird being around.  He would always roost on my deck rail at night...until a raccoon (I assume) got to him one night and killed him.  I only saw a few feathers on the ground...I suppose it could have been a cat but was not one of mine since they do not have outside priviledges.  Oh well,  that's my story....didn't mean to drag it out so much....

Thank you so much for the nice reply.  What a story!  I am also feeding this bird and probably just adding danger to is fate.  We have to go out of town so often, so we cannot look after him as well as you did yours.  I wish I could get the band off of his leg and do the same as you did since this pigeon seems to be very friendly also. Thanks again.

...the bird that took up here would let me get closer and closer day by day until I was finally able to reach down while he was eating from a dish on the ground and catch him...after putting him back down, he did not go far away and returned very shortly...they really are very friendly birds...good luck

I had a friend that raised the birds. He said that if they didn't return without stopping, he didn't want them.

I know someone who would like the bird if you want it gone.

Let me see if it is still here in the morning.  I will let you know.  We go out of town tomorrow and won't be back until Monday, but I might could get my neighbors to help capture it.  I would love to keep it, except we have many raccoons (they eat out cats food) and I have a large outside cat. Thanks for the reply.

I raised Homing Pigeons for 15  have years. Chances are what you have isn't one. There are about 250 different types of fancy pigeons. If it is a Homer it is from poor breeding stock. What I am trying to say is protect the bird if you can.

All pigeon breeders band their birds at birth. If you have any questions call me.

they band their birds wouldn't the breeder or owner's name or code be on there? Are there any local associations for folks that have homing pidgeons? Hey! This one has a collar and a tag!

They did not chip it... or would you chirp a bird?

We got back home around noon and Homer was on our porch roof waiting!  I was so glad to see he was fine and doing well. Thanks for all the feedback on homing pigeons, quite fascinating.
