From the Constitution of the United States of American:

Article the third [Amendment I]

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

AGAIN, I must point out that this DOES NOT call for “separation of church and state.”  That particular phrase was in a letter from Thomas Jefferson to a Baptist convention.  The TRUE meaning of the constitutional clause is that the Congress will not be able to establish an official church (religion) of the United States and use taxes (quit rent) to subsidize the official church.  An example of an official religion was, in the time of our founding, the Anglican Church AKA The Church of England. 

The second phrase requires that people will be freely able to practice their religion without interference from the government.

The First Amendment has been routinely misquoted and abused by litigation in this country.  The establishment of Sharia Law, with official standing and sanction… would be unconstitutional.
