Heard on the news that 3M will discontinue retiree medical benefits due to higher cost. Is anyone surprised?

It is not that bad. 3M will provide money for the individual to buy their own coverage. This is the conservative's approach of take responsibilty for your own coverage. McCain was pushing a similar plan. The following is part of an article in the WSJ: The St. Paul, Minn., manufacturing conglomerate notified employees on Friday that it would change retiree benefits both for those who are too young to qualify for Medicare and for those who qualify for the Medicare program. Both groups will get an unspecified health reimbursement instead of having access to a company-sponsored health plan. “As you know, the recently enacted health care reform law has fundamentally changed the health care insurance market,” the memo said. “Health care options in the marketplace have improved, and readily available individual insurance plans in the Medicare marketplace provide benefits more tailored to retirees’ personal needs often at lower costs than what they pay for retiree medical coverage through 3M.

so they will 'get an unspecified reinbursement rather than having access to the corprorate sponsored plan??'  If I were a career 3M employee, I would feel really good about that 'Hope and Change."

Everytime i read one of your posts or responses ... I ask myself if you are really that blind and stupid ... how can anyone respond and think the way you do. there is no correlation to what you tried to tie together. 3M's actions are a direct result, and Penalty, to their retirees as a result of Obamacare. Additionally they go from a free enterprise health program to a socialist government one that has NEVER worked or controlled cost. Great, now they can get rationed care, wait in lines and government red tape in their senior years. What others proposed was to provide freedom of choice and allow free enterprise to compete by puchasing across state lines (which obamacare still did not address). Wake up and either admit this administration is a total failure, or answer the question I and others have asked you ... what is it that you feel they have done that is so good, working and moving the country in the right direction that deserves your blind support.

You do understand that 3M is a business and that this qualifies as a business decision? To translate: it will cost 3M less. Which means less than the already cut rate deal they were getting with whatever health insurance provider they had prior to this decision, which likely translates to less coverage for the individual employee. So its not that bad...just worse than what they started with.

I'm not sure that this is a fall out from Obamacare.  This sounds like 3M has decided to make a business decision to reduce costs at the expense of their retirees.  They probably figure they can cover it up by blaming it on Obamacare.

I think that companies should not change the game on their retirees.  I want to say it should be Illegal, but of course, this is a moral and ethical issue, not a legal one.  And they are doing this to their retirees at an age when it will cost them more to get independent health insurance.

Health care insurance is going up.  Recent article in B'ham paper indicated that BCBS of Alabama will be going up on average 8% this coming year.  My health insurance has been going up 8-12% every year.

Yeah, I'd feel real confident about that; after having a total reimbursement progam for 30+ years. And the hits just keep on coming. Way to go Obama, you have totally fooled or screwed over half of our population. You and your Chicago machine are pretty slick. I'll give you that.

In response to Hound's post. The Health Insurance Companies, (BCBS and others) see what is on the horizon and are "sticking" it to us now in hopes of staying solvent in the future. I am an independent business man and, as such, I do not have access to group rates. My rate increases were averaging about 7% for the last 10 years until Obamacare passed. In July, my rate went from $447 a month to $558. This is with a $3,500 deductible. You do the math. It appears to be about a 20% increase. OK, from constant 7% increases to 20% overnight. Hmmmmmm........

Look at RomneyCare and it's "oversight" of insurance premiums - the Government has no clue about what it takes to run a business, and no understanding that if a private company keeps bleeding money, they go OUT of business. Part of ObamaCare is raising the age of eligible children on a parent's contract to 26 years old, regardless of dependent status. So you could have your kid - you know - the 25 year old, unemployed, married father of six on your company's tab - no way THAT would raise costs. Is it an unintended consequence of this Marxist administration that businesses go insolvent?

The retirees will use the money to buy a Medicare supplement similar to what millions have purchased. The coverage is from a private carrier and is not socialism. You are so out of touch with reality. You probably believe as does the idiot candidate from Deleware that a human brain was transplanted into a mouse. You resent that others will be covered and you may have a longer line. That is typical greed that is common among wing nuts. You are a great American in your mind who believes if I have it screw everyone who doesn't. And to think you are a graduate of Emory.

GF, as a greedy wing nut, I don't resent others being covered. Nor do I think that everyone who hasn't made it should be screwed. I believe that there are many much better alternatives to the law passed in March, that is simply reparations in a costume. I support free clinics for those unable to afford care. I support communes for those unable to afford housing. I support government distribution of food to those unable to afford their own. I don't support everyone having taxpayer provided access to the things that I have earned through commitment to education followed by years of hard work and personal sacrifice. I believe that people must be both responsible and accountable for their actions. I believe that you, and the other Mona's, have had your hands in my pockets far too long. I believe that you should work, hunt, or starve. And, if you don't agree with me, perhaps you are a candidate for the internment camps Frederico Pena (member of the Clinton Cabinet) and Betsy Markey (D) CO-04 are talking about. By the way, I find your fixation with Christine O'Donnell amusing. Is it her age? Her eyes? Perhaps some other feature(s)?

My fixation is the utter shock that Conservatives would nominate an absolute idiot as their candidate in Deleware for US Senate. If you want to fix what is wrong in this country, you don't nominate a moron as the solution. Nothing to do with her hair or eyes. If she were a Dem you would be all over her for being a witch and believing that they transplanted a human brain into a mouse. "American scientific companies are cross-breeding humans and animals and coming up with mice with fully functioning human brains." --Delaware GOP Senate nominee Christine O'Donnell, discussing cloning with Fox News Channel's Bill O'Reilly, 1997 Got it??????

GF, I suppose the good thing about O'Donnell is it gives you another conservative woman to fixate and foam at the mouth about besides Palin.  If you want to hold us accountable for one person, O'Donnell, then you need to hold yourself accountable for the dozens of morons on the left that occupy elected office.  I could make a list of 5 idiotic comments from Dems that are more stupid than what she said if you want.  In fact, I could probably come up with five from Joe Biden alone.  Go ahead, test me.  You just can't have it both ways.

Besides, if she is a solid conservative vote as Senator of Delaware she can be a hair-brained witch for all I care.  Why I want her there and why I sent her money was she will be infinitely better than the bearded Marxist running away from OCarter and his failed agenda and every single Dem in the Senate.

Yawn ... jellyfish ... your inability to look at the destruction your own party has, along with wackos in your own party party, is amazing. Focus on facts and issues. No matter how much you attack others, it does not erase the failures and failed policies of the liberal socialists. Sorry ... it does not work that way. Your hypocracy makes me laugh. Very entertaining.

Sending an idiot to Washington to replace an idiot makes great sense. That is how the lunatics on the right are going to solve the problems we face as a nation. To each his own.

That's the way you Dems have always done it. We're just trying to follow your pattern. Probably won't work but, what the he!!, what's good for the goose is certainly good for the gander. Right fisherman?

This quote, from a practicing witch, reveals the recipient of the transplanted mouse brain -- According to House Majority Leader Nancy Pelosi, we have found the way to get out of our economic malaise. At a press conference in her home town of San Francisco, Pelosi explained that the Food Stamp program’s multiplier effect –the amount of money generated in the local economy as the result of the subsidy– far exceeds the nearly $60 billion spent this year by the federal government and is a sure-fire way to stimulate the economy. For every dollar a person receives in food stamps, Pelosi said that $1.79 is put back into the economy. The U.S. Department of Agriculture cites an even higher figure of $1.84. “It is the biggest bang for the buck when you do food stamps and unemployment insurance. The biggest bang for the buck,” she said. As for the 1997 interview with O'Rielly, found the video and figured it out....... it is the Catholic High School uniform......right?

I agree that Pelosi comes across as an idiot at times. Don't you want to have better candidates to run for the Senate than Christine? If you truly want to defend Christine, that is your prerogative. She still comes across as an idiot and moron.

So GF, rather than obsess about a single candidate in Delaware, what can you tell us that YOUR chosen ones have done that is good for the country?  The economic mess that was spawned by a Democrat Congress but blamed on Bush by those same Democrats is getting worse?  The fact that we have become the laughing stock of the world?  Even the Europeans have realized the folly of socialism and are heading away from it.

What do YOU have to be proud of?  Tell me GF, is it the Porkulus that didn't work?  The health scare bill that is already manifesting what its critics predicted, just sooner?   Is it Rangel and Maxine whats-her face and their sterling ethics that Pelosi claimed she would clean up?  Come on, GF, give us a shard of evidence that YOUR side is doing better. You must stay up nights and weekends trying to find the least significant morsel to attack.

Or just be the sniveling, sniping, gutless twerp that we have become so accustomed to.  You don't have the 3alls to be a man (or woman...is that what you are?) and face up to reality.

Dam*, Hodgie I really upset you. I agree that Maxine and Charlie are bozos and need to go. Is it too much to ask that you and your far out right allies nominate quality candidates? You are too sensitive...kinda like a socialist Frenchman. Maybe, you need to spend more time in the USA and toughen up that thin skin. I will try and be kinder and gentler in the future. Au revoir Monsieur Hodgieee.

Since you chose to quote from my post, I will as well.

"what can you tell us that YOUR chosen ones have done that is good for the country?"

and....

"What do YOU have to be proud of?"

Your answers?

And try to get the country right, signore doofus.  Its arrivederci.
