First posted rule when you go into these message boards:

  • While debating and discussion is fine, we will not tolerate rudeness, insulting posts, personal attacks or purposeless inflammatory posts. Our decision is final in these matters.
While I don't go into "off-topic" as much as the other categories here, when I do I often see "rudeness, insulting posts, personal attacks and purposeless inflammatory posts" that can be done in private or elsewhere IMO.

The political brow beating is tiresome and not something that should be the front runner every day in a lakes discussion forum.  I realize all message boards ultimately decompose down to this type of posting but for some reason I thought it was less likely on boards that were about recreational activities and the beauty of being on or near a lake...my mistake.

If it were "On Topic" it would be about Lake Martin Topics, Boat Maintenance, etc.  Off topic means it is not about the topic of the lake or other lake-related stuff.  I very much enjoy the banter here and have learned a lot, been alerted to a number of interesting articles and videos and enjoy debating my views with others.  Yes it sometimes becomes contentious as would most discussions about issues like politics and religion.  And at times it does get too personal as it often does with those same topics.

Since it would appear that the Off Topics forum has evolved into a mostly political discussion and you don't enjoy that my suggestion is to spend your time on the Lake Martin Topics.  I read it as often as the Off Topic and find it very broad in terms of the lake-related topics.  And considering it has almost 77,000 messages versus the ~20,000 on Off Topic it seems very well represented.

my objection isn't the political discussions or expressions but the disrespectful "banter".  Seems over the top.

For a man with "meanie" in his alias, it seems you came prepared to do battle.

They came here to "off topic" and tried to redefine it to be lake related and since they don't like the conversation here, we should all change to comply with the 'meanies' code of conduct. The modrators do quite well at policing us TYVM. As the holder of the most deleted posts award I can assure you they will remove ANYTHING they don't like. My suggestion: IF you don't like it, don't read it!! It aint being force fed to ya.

One day I’m sure I will be surprised to discover that the Off-Topic Forum is cancelled. Censorship is a sure way to tamp down dissent.  I wish we could get debate where both (all) sides come armed with facts, history, civics, economics, and philosophy.  However, on this forum one side of the debate frequently finds themselves stranded without a basis for their argument.  Then, when canned phrases don’t qualify as support, name calling and personal attacks spring up.  While I find such non-sequitor to be annoying, I keep coming back to hear from all sides.

see liberals want to get rid of conservative talk radio, shut down FOX and now even a conversation board.  All because it does not align with their point of view.  :)

Hey, folks, why jump to conclusions.  The guy might just have a good point, that is a-political.

Is it possible that blmeanie is a new inductee into the Witness Protection Program? New identity (forum alias)! Or a plant in the forum to make conservative contributors "feel bad". Maybe a better fit would be to talk about the geese poop on the land, how to be nice and not make anyone angry, or run for public office.

or maybe I was just wondering if more effective dialog between those that disagree would be better than the emotional immature name calling that ends up in every political post here.

Disagree with your characterization of "emotional immature name calling that ends up in every political post here."

Indeed there is spirited debate but the immature name calling is the exception.  Most debate is on the issues, although at times strident to the point that it might appear to be personal.

You have some posters who are very convinced that their ideas are very correct and others not so correct, and they are not wilting flowers when it comes to debating those ideas.

You have others who tend to throw stink-bombs into the classroom and then run and hide.

And indeed there is a minority who (at times I wonder if it is out of total frustration in trying to engage in meaningful debate when the opposing side won't substantiate their claims) step over the line and resort to name-calling.  Unfortunately I have been guilty of that myself in the past and try very hard not to repeat that.

Bottom line is this:  This forum is what it is.  The Webmaster and at least one other trusted forum member check content and deal with it if they feel it is over the line.  If you find it objectionable, then without malice I suggest you leave it to the rest of us.

Have you ever posted on the forum? I do not recall seeing your alias since I have been a forum member.

I have but I'm not on Lake Martin so some of my posts probably hit other areas on the forums.

I notice that you are located on Lake Allatoona and there is a Forum for that lake. However, since it was established by the Web Master in 2006, there has not been one entry. You need to try and get that one active similar to the Lake Martin Forum. You ask an interesting question. A forum and its anonymity enables posters to act out their aggressions in a manner that they would never do in a business meeting, at home, or socially. You need to realize that characterizations made on the forum toward another is simply rhetoric. Adults should be able to handle it or, if not, put the person on ignore. If it really bothers you, then you need to consider discontinue reading the offending Off-Topic section. I would have no problem meeting any poster for a cup of coffee. Only caveat is that they pay as I am a "socialist".

to the left of this block I have eight "categories" that show up:

off-topic
boat maintenance
Jokes
Sports
Grilling & Recipes
Tallapoosa River Topics
Lake Allatoona Fishing
Lake Allatoona Topics

yes, I see no activity in the bottom 3 but from the names and discussions I do see in the other categories I realize it is centric to Lake Martin.  I actually participate in the college football pool and fantasy league with (assumed) mostly Lake Martin "people".

I'm fine with staying and reading, I do learn things in all directions from the political posts made.  I just was wondering about whether there is moderation in place.  Multiple people have replied that there is and some posts evidently get deleted which I was unaware.

I agree that anonymous names allow things to escalate quickly and more easily.  It is what it is.

Continue on, forgive the interruption...
