What should you do if you hit a deer on the public highway?  I know it is going to happen and just want to be prepared.

Field dress it, skin it and cut it up ASAP. After that, just post on the forum when you will be grilling.

I hit one tonight. Got home and called a friend who is a big time hunter, told him he could dress his 1st deer of the year if he wanted it. Described where the deer would be, he went to retrieve it but it wasn't there, came to get me at my house to be sure of the correct location- low and behold the deer was gone. I just don't see how it survived. It did about three 360 spins into the ditch. Anyway, when you hit one just call a hunter that you know, if they get it within the hour they can field dress and get to their processor.

Do you call the police if you hit a squirrel?

I take it there was no damage to your car? If not, you got lucky. What's your deductible? btw...the average cost to process a deer at a good deer processor is around $75. also....if you encounter a deer on the road, don't swerve to miss it. Hitting an animal is covered under your comprehensive coverage. Most insurance companies won't hit you for additional premiums for minor losses under your comprehensive coverage. However, if you swerve to miss a deer and run off the road and hit a tree, that's covered under your collision coverage - same as if you rearend someone. Insurance companies will ding your rates.

alabamaangler....that was a great post with some very good information regarding the insurance side of a situation like this. It's refreshing to see a post like this on the forum.

Maybe someone saw it happen or came up right after you left and found the deer still warm, in which case I bet they took it home.

no problem. just thought I'd chime in - perhaps it'll save someone some money, frustration, and even their life. I've seen a lot of single car wrecks that ended up in a fatality....gotta wonder if they swerved to miss a deer? Deer are pretty animals, but they are not worth the risk of the consequences of swerving to miss.

Do not erase evidence of the deer from your vehicle if you plan to claim it on your insurance. Hitting a deer (or it hitting you) is a 'no fault' accident. Many false claims are made in attempts to NOT get points so your insurance company will be looking for actual evidence. Also- File a report. You will have to walk in to the police or sherrif's office that has jurisdiction but it is additional evidence for your insurance company. In fact, law agencies now automatically file a report to your insurance company (this is PART of the reason they ask for proof of insurance) after taking a report.

The last one I hit was in Clay County. I called and they came out to do a report. One of them asked if I wanted the meat. When I told him I was not interested they called the jail and a jailer and two trustee's (low risk inmates) showed up and field dressed the deer. They all claimed the inmates loved it when they got to eat the road kill. It is real meat as opposed to mystery meat and bolagna sandwiches they usually get.

Just curious, did anyone notice the Username on the last post about the inmates enjoying the venison?
