I hope I don’t step out of bounds here, but I GOTTA vent. I plan on traveling to Dadeville, Alabama to open the store tomorrow, but I will make a stop on the way. As usual wonderful children started knocking and asking for orders of Cookie Dough recently! Yea, when I got home Madi had the same order forms. When I read the forms, and gathered any and all information, the name of the company is “A+ Sales, LLC. 17324 Hwy 280, Dadeville, Al. 36853. Now, I don’t mind any company, or individual making financial support to our school system, but I got to know just how much (as a percent of) the dollar sales created from our children go to their particular school, or public school system! If my neighbors, parents, employees, etc. are going to make a purchase from MY and YOUR child to support fund raisers for the School system they attend then I want to know what is actually going back to improve my/our childs education. Tomorrow, I aim to find out. Yep, CAT is going CATHOUSE CSI so to speak. I am sure this has been done before. I just hope I find favorable results, and all is well. I’ll get back with you. CAT Just sayin’

I think it's a waste. They get a very low percentage. You will have a better impact by sponsoring a classroom directly. For example, providing copy paper, school supplies, etc.

We sold doughnuts in school. The product was fresh and was with-in reason. Now you order this stuff, it takes months to receive and it's often crap.

I'm sure there resale to the school cost V's what they discount it for a charity, It's very far from there cost to produce V's what's given in the end.

GO getem inspector Cat!

Well Inspector CAT you are the perfect guy to make an evaluation since you also own a business and understand overhead. Be sure to wear your overcoat and CAT hat.

I know the owner of this business and consider her a friend.  As to the percentage that the school sees from these fundraisers, 40-45%.  Before you make judgement on the percentage, keep in mind these things:  She hires (and pays)  local people to work with her, thereby, helping our community.  Schools WANT to do this because they get more out of these fundraisers than by trying to elicit individual donations from parents. I know of new gym floors, signs on football fields, an entire gym was built with funds raised by this company.  As any business goes, there are always overhead costs.  She has to pay her employees, pay for and maintain a warehouse, pay shipping costs, insurance, taxes, etc., etc.  As for donating paper and items directly, I've done that in the past and it does not always benefit the child or class you are donating to.  Everyone has an opinion and that's fine.  This business is on the up and up and I'm sure Miss Julie would welcome a visit from local people wanting to know more about what she does for her meager living.  I know I cringe when I see the kids coming with their order forms and wonder how much of my money is actually helping.  Ask Miss Julie, she's a wonderful, good-hearted lady who believes in what she's doing.

Just my two cents worth.

MANY OF YOU HAVE HAD COMPLAINTS ABOUT FUNDRAISING AND THE PROFITS THAT THE SCHOOL MAKES. APPARENTLY SCHOOLS PROFIT FROM FUNDRAISING AND ARE HAPPY WITH THE PERCENTAGES THEY RECEIVE BECAUSE THEY COTINUE TO USE HER BUSINESS. LIKE YOU, I ALSO HAVE QUESTIONS. CAN YOU PLEASE EXPLAIN TO ME EXACTLY HOW MUCH (PERCENTAGE) A BOATING  COMPANY PUTS BACK INTO THE SCHOOL SYSTEMS.

    CONCERNED!!!!!

I read H2O girls post and say to myself, "maybe there are other things to consider about a question I have often wondered about"....then I read this trash and say "could this first time poster be the business owner"? Whoever it is, he/ she should remain silent because he/she has no clue about making new friends in new places......or about garnering support for a local business.

If you are referring to "getyrfactsraight", I don't know this person but I know it's not the business owner. That said, this business owner has a lot of friends in our community, she lives in our community and gives to our community.  She happened to be a fundraising event for a local dog rescue when SHE got word of the post on here.  I'm willing to bet the angry poster is someone who knows what a wonderful, honest and kind person she is and probably just trying to have her back. She's been here for a while.  Like I said before, she hires a lot of local people that think the world of her so...........just saying.  Go talk to her, then bash away if you think something is out of whack with her business.  THAT's how local folks get along.

NO I AM NOT THE BUSINESS OWNER.  I JUST THINK IT IS UNFAIR THAT SOMEONE CAN COME INTO OUR COMMUNITY AND BASH ON ANOTHER BUSINESSES WHEN THEY ARE TRYING TO START ONE OF THEIR OWN IN THIS AREA. AND YES, I AM SURE THAT ANY QUESTIONS YOU HAVE, MISS JULIE BROCK WOULD GLADLY ANSWER. I AM SURE SHE HAS NOTHING TO HIDE.

You make solid points and I'm certainly not bashing her. My point was more in line with presenting a solid argument in a civilized manner which the new poster did not do and then made her argument (or lack there of) personal . I didn't take Steve's comment as bashing either....I think he just had some questions that were valid. Thank you for providing good answers.

I believe that when ever a charity is trying to raise money and is relying on the good will of the community and the desire of certain members of that community to support the efforts of other members, especially children, then it should be incumbent on the fund raising organization to stipulate how much of every dollar spent on an item actually goes to the charity.

For instance, if a roll of cookie dough cost ten dollars and the school gets two dollars of that ten, the sales pitch should include that information.

And you should be given the option of making a charitable contribution instead of buying the cookies.  Then I could give 100 dollars to the school,  take the 30 dollars I save on taxes and buy twice as much cookie dough while the school gets their take increased 500%.

My father was always against anyone having his children huckster for such causes.  When I or my sibs were called upon to do so,  he would go to the organization and write them a check for the amount of the number of items we were to sell.  He would tell the organization that he did not want the items,  they should not purchase them for him, and they should use the money they saved for the organization.

I think my dad did the right thing,  because at the end of the day the items either made you fatter or ended up in a landfill.

Well said.  The more yelling in my face the less likely I am to give any credence to what one says.  "Methinks thou protesteth too much" sort of thing.
CAT did not bash anybody, merely asked and stated a reasonalbe question.
We are quite generous is supporting local charities.  I think on this one, your Fathers approach will be my response.

When we do busines with a "boat company", grocer, restaurant, sporting goods store or whatever; we do so because they offer a service or goods that we like at a price that we consider to be fair (in most cases). When we make a puchase that is made on the premise of a contribution - in MOST cases, we do so for the contribution, and not the widget we are buying.

Give it a rest.  If you want to support the organization, buy the product.  If you don't want support it, then don't.  No matter what the % is, schools need all the money they can get.  As for the question as to how much a boat business contributes, just like you and me, the property taxes they pay support all of education.

40% range is a great amount.  I trust you are correct, being that you know the company and its owner.  That makes be feel better.  Thanks for your information!

Where did I bash in my post?  I refer to Children as "WONDERFUL" (I love kids).  I looked up the company name, and yep, it is for real!  I said I DON'T MIND ANY COMPANY MAKING FINANCIAL SUPPORT TO OUR SCHOOL SYSTEM.  I simply would like to know what percent of sales goes back to the school.  (Not a bad question at all).  If H20 girl is right about 40%+ that is great.  I even said in my post that I HOPE to find favorable results.  NOW, you kinda bashed me, so here you go. My only avenue for supporting local schools, YMCA, etc. is by buying a banner to hang in the Gym, or donations to Clubs such as BETA, etc.  I did not bash this company in anyway whatsoever!   Your reply directed at me was a little harsh.

Steve

When I was still working, I would dread the start of school, because our office would be inundated with requests to buy candles, wrapping paper, frozen pizzas, and a host of other things no one wanted because the school children were required to sell such.  It didn't stop in the office -- outside the grocery store there would be kids every day selling Crispy Creme donuts for this or that cause.  I felt bad for the parents, I felt bad for the kids and I felt bad for my employees, because who doesn't want to support their co-workers kids, when next week it would be their turn.

I'm not casting aspersions on those who are professional fundraisers or those who develop products for school kids to sell.  But, why not raise the property taxes to the point that such efforts are not required?  If the schools are in such need that they have to turn school children into little hucksters, then there is a problem.  Or maybe schools could publish a list of twhat they need in the local newspaper and let the community donate directly to the school.

We had an "adopt a school" program where we donated basic school supplies to a particular school.  Additionally, people were given a few hours a week off from work to actually go to the school and tutor.  It was a great program, and everyone got a lot out of it.

Cat, I don't think you did anything wrong asking the question.  You know those organizations that call on the phone to support the police or firefighters?  Only 10% that money ever gets donated.  You don't know unless you ask the questions.
