I was wondering how scattered were the members of Lake Martin forum on this Thanksgiving Day. My wife and I celebrated early with our families and slipped out of town on Wednesday. We just ate a great meal at Poogan's Porch in Charleston SC
Where are you? How scattered are we?

Listening to the waves crash on the beach in south east Florida. All the kids are here, the weather is great, and my beer is cold..... although I just got ordered to fold up the netbook cause the cards are dealt for canasta game 3. Happy Thanksgiving to all!!

not on the road. The weather at the lake was fantastic for Thanksgiving. Mid 70's this afternoon and grilled steaks this evening and dined outside. All doors open and screens in place.

So how did you like Poogan's Porch? We ate there once and it was fairly good, but other reviews havn't been too stellar.
And if you are in the mood for seafood downtown go to Hanks - pretty good and if you sit at the "community table" you'll get to have conversations with three or four sets of other patrons. We really enjoyed that.
And if you want to have good seafood served on paper plates on an old concrete pad (obviously poured at different times), and under a tin roof - go to The Wreck of The Richard and Charlene in Shem Creek...use a GPS or you'll never find it.
As long as you have $$ (and in some cases a sense of adventure) you'll never lack for a good meal in Charleston.

I agree mr. hodja....good food can be had in this area. The little stretch of Queen's street has Poogan's, Husk, and 82 Queen, all fantastic. We had a great meal, went fro traditional although their seafood offerings were tempting. Turkey, dressing with giblet gravy, ham, corn pudding, vege medley, sweet potato...I'm stuffed. She Crab soup and appetizer rolls were great too.
Had one of our best meals at Hanks, I agree with you on that one, and will set the GPS for the others. Will have to do room service tomorrow from 2:30 eastern to about 7
Talisi, the high today in Charleston was 81. They had a 5K turkey trot and gobble wobble.

SNOB (Slightly North of Broad) has some great crabcakes and High Cotton is good as well, but both are about $$$ plus on a $$$$ scale.
Hymans is a tourist trap and not worth the wait. The Boathouse used to have some really good (and spicy) shrimp and grits but they closed their location on East Bay. If you venture out as far as Isle of Palms Morgan Creek Bar and Grill is good.

Stayed put in Wetumpka but my wife's parents made a trek over from Columbus, GA. Early this morning was cool so jeans were appropriate for last minute yard and patio clean up from last nights rain - but we quickly changed to shorts.
We decided to deviate from tradition a little this year....instead of turkey, I smoked a duck on the BGE with apple and maple wood chips and basted it with a butter/red wine mixture. My wife broke tradition as well with a venison sausage/apple/walnut stuffing instead of the cornbread dressing that I have had for 43 years and that we have had for our 20 years of marriage. Cranberry/pear sauce instead of just plain cranberry sauce. Green beans with roasted garlic instead of country grean beans. Sweet potato casserole - this was the only thing that was the usual fare.
For dessert, Mother in law brought a pumpkin roll with cream cheese and a pecan pie laced with whiskey and chocolate. YUM!!
Everything was great today. We especially liked the duck.
Hope everyone had a great and safe day. Even though Black Friday is starting several hours early for some, let's all remember the real reason for the upcoming season.

this tradition cracks me up. My wife (the ultimate sport shopper*) and kids just took off for stores opening at 10PM and midnight here in South Florida; They love the challenge.....OK by me as I can now watch a few of the late night football games, LOL
*sport shopper- one who shops for sport with a competitive edge for finding "the deal"

Well, up here on Logan Martin, we had the inlaws and the menu included:
2 turkeys, 1 smoked, 1 fried
3 racks of baby back ribs
smoked ham
Prime Rib (cooked on the smoker with my Grandmothers marinade recipe)
3 smoked pheasants
Green beans, corn, mac and cheese, dressing, asparagus, cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes ect.. And more cookies, cakes, pies and fudge than 23 people could eat.
And I was really digging the weather. Started the day cooking pancakes for the kids while the smoker was heating up. Was in shorts by noon. I don't remember the last Thanksgiving I wore shorts but I liked it!
Finally ran them all off about 10:00 pm as the girls went bargain hunting. Finished off the evening with a Jameson and a short cuban cigar. Life is good.

I traveled a mere 300 yards to my parents home, where I met up with my sisters, and there families. We ate well, but the best thing that happened was, my father told me EVERY child and grandchild and great grandchild was all at home at the same time. I took notice of his comment, and sure enough. My two sisters and I, along with ALL of our children (we each have two) and two only grandchildren were all there. It was way cool.

Stayed at home in the Port Of Hanover Alabama.
I cooked a long time family tradition of Sauerbraten. Also cooked a traditional Turkey and fixings for my Yankee husband. Had a few drop in friends as usual that had to do a sampler from house to house. All in all it was the best Thanksgiving since Mom passed away back in 2007. I finally nailed the Sauerbraten recipe this year.
I hope you all have a great Black / Iron bowl Friday.

But I gotta agree with Cat. That sounds pretty darn cool. I don't have grandkids yet but I did have both the kids and their respective boy and girl friends here. And my son did bring my grandog :-)

Found myself in Savannah for a reunion (wife's side) with both my grown sons. They got to see cousins they have not seen in forty some years. Oldest son from Atlanta and youngest came from Cordova, Tn.(Memphis) Food was all Southern fare and wonderful. Have you ever tried a red velvet cheesecake?? Really good!! Before we left on Friday, we went to the Shrimp Factory on the river to see paintings that my BIL had done on the walls 40 years ago. Had a great shrimp lunch and enjoyed the art-work. Really love being a transplanted yankee!!

Stayed home, donated 20 turkeys, charved mucho turkeys, and helped prepare 680 meals to be delivered. Will do the same for Xmas. A bit of advice... let them cool before you carve. I used an electric carving knife and much easier when cool.

At the lake until Thursday am. Traveled to ATL area where the daughter (20 years old) cooked her first complete Thanksgiving meal. Did a fabulous job except she burned the he$$ out of her arm. Gonna leave a major scar. Trophy Husband and I cleaned the dishes as in our house, "those that cook don't do the dishes". Took FOREVER as that kid must have used every dish she could find or borrow. Been watching football and hanging out since.

Glad the first meal was a big success and I hope the arm heals very well.
It may not be the religious thing to do, but I have always thought we needed Christmas to always be celebrated on the fourth Thursday of December, so that is could always be the long weekend that T-day is. Headed home from Charleston today. Has been a great visit, good sites, good weather, great food. Thanks mr. Hodja for the dining tips. We made it to the Wreck and to Morgan Creek. Was our first time to venture out a bit. This historic area is quite a place.

Collinsville, MS on Thursday with my MIL's side of the family. we made a day trip out of it! ..... Friday, football and Christmas decorations! ....Saturday FIL came to visit here at the lake! Sunday, had my parents here for my own Thanksgiving meal! (i love to cook...never get to do it for anyone for Thanksgiving ..other than a sidedish or two..) ... my 1st turkey was moist and my cranberry salsa was worthy of the trash! ....can't blame a girl for trying ...it was still better than the blob out of the can ...:) ....Happy Thanksgiving weekend!
