I have Direct TV.....my question is will they do a seasonal program? Basically we use 3-4 months out of year and paying 80 bucks amonth for 7-8 months would buy a lot of beer. Any suggestions? Insights?

This is no answer to your direct question (no pun intended), but don't be afraid to call and ask them. If you are in a contract on that particular receiver or your entire account, probably not. You are usually in a contract if you are within a year of new service or a leased receiver upgrade.

DirecTV is receiving a lot of flack about competing with Dish Network's "Free HD for Life" offering, so they are authorizing "Free HD" by request/complaint but for only a 6-month period (a $60 savings). DirecTV is more expensive than Dish for a reason (more channels). More channels cost more to provide due to the re-broadcast fees.

I found an interesting approach with our ISP. They said no "vacation" plan for reduced rates. I ased can I just change my plan to basic and the answer was yes. I then asked if I cancel until I return what will it cost to reconnect. The response was 24.95. So, I canceled the service and upon returning I called and they said ...oh you are a new customer and qualify for all this free stuff plus rates at 1/2 the regular rate for the next 12 months. I do not have Direct or Dish and so not understand their pricing. But, you may try these two approaches if they do not oferf a "vacation" plan. Another approach with Times Warner... they will shut down your cable and TV with a charge of $7.00 per month. You call them and they reconnect that day from their office. Try these with Direct.

Just curious...how many channels do you get? I have the 250 channel package with Dish and there are actuality more than that I think. When I left Direct, Dish had more for less but that may have changed. My current bill is about $90 for 2 HD TVs, 2 regular TV's, and 2 of those TV's are on DVR.

As for suspendending Direct, they did have a good policy on that when I was with them. They allowed you to susspend your subscription when away even if under contract. However, The time suspended was then added to your original contract completion date. Back then, they didn't even charge for the service but I think that changed. That was 5 or 6 years ago and may be totally different now, but I would ask. One of the reasons I left was because they did change many of their policies and I had some real issues with their customer service. Also, they wouldn't upgrade my outdated equipment without very significant charges. Whats funny is they called a few months after I left (and signed with Dish) offering all kinds of new deals....oops, too late.

Your question sparked in interest in investigating this further. I believe things have changed. There are a lot of caveats to tallying the channel counts (packages and whether you count sports channels, premiums, PPV, etc.). In my case, I only care about HD channels. I have all non-HD channels de-programmed out of my channel guide. I'm currently doing an analysis comparing DirecTV and Dish and will report my findings. This is actually for personal web site project I've had in mind for quite some time. Stay tuned.
