At the risk of being called a Bleeding Heart Liberal.

My SIL just called me to tell me to hurry up and clean out my pantry, because the local food bank is just about wiped out.  They need food, they need money.  At least 15 kids from 5 different local families will not be getting anything for Christmas.

So while we are all debating in our warm homes with food to eat and probably just about everything we might want, keep in mind those who are so less fortunate this year.  I have to say that the thought of kids without anything for Christmas moves me to tears, so in addition of my excess canned good, I'll be writing a check too.

If you can find it in your heart, check in with your local food bank and see what they need.  Make it your gift to yourself.

Hound, that was a stupid and offensive post..  I'm a conservative.  I  also suspect I am donate as much as you do to the needy..  It's not liberal or conservative..  it's compassion, Christian and the right thing to do..  I don't need your reminder..

and for those who can give additional help, remember there are several other funds that do good work for those in need: United Way, Salvation Army, Food Pantries, Red Cross, Toys for Tots, local churches, etc. I really like that our extended families started some time ago giving to the local needy rather than exchanging gifts amoung ourselves. I suspect there are a million instances of this going on in all of our communities with little or no fan fare. Merry Christmas!

When my SIL called me this afternoon, I just felt so awful knowing that there were local people going without, while I sit here and bid on stuff I probably don't need on Ebay.  Apparently the group is even looking for used toys.  The idea that kids would go without something for Christmas honestly breaks my heart.  I grew up for much of my childhood as an only child and only grandchild and got so much for Christmas I didn't know what to play with first.  I have a feeling that a lot of kids and grandkids are the same. (I know my niece is)

know a lot of people here donate generously, but maybe like me, don't necessarly thing about the food bank.  I guess I just assumed that they got a lot of donations from supermarkets, food companies, etc.

Sorry if I offended you.  It was not my intention at all.

Hound, you owe no apology to anyone. I can't imagine anyone having an issue with your post. Remember, in Phiadelphia at the Eagles game, they even boo Santa Claus. Can you tell me what SIL stands for?? Is it Santa Is Liberal?

I think you are leaning more conservative because you want to use your money instead of the government using other peoples money.  This what more Americans need to do and not count on the government for charity.  Congratulations on giving.

Hound, not a bleeding heart liberal thing at all.  Fact is numerous studies have shown that conservatives are much more generous with charities than liberals so its more like "not to be a bleeding heart conservative".  :-)

Anyway, its a good reminder to all of us that a lot of people this time of year are in need so we need to be generous!  Thanks for the reminder.
