I'm wondering what people here think about this.  Leadership or Embarassment?

When I was still working, I had a Navy Chief that was my Admin Assistant.  He was a Surface Warfare guy and used to tell me some of the "rituals" and things they did aboad ship to break up the boredom.  A lot of it would probably be considered "questionable" if it made the evening news, but I don't really think there was any evil intent about it.

I wonder if this would have happened if someone hadn't leaked this to the internet?  And if it wasn't coming so close on the heels of revisiting DADT, would the Navy brass be so ready to relieve him.  Seems a shame that a man's career is over based on a video that is several years old and while maybe a bit raunchy, actually did have a point behind it.

Anybody have any thoughts?

I think this is the continuing effort of the press and the destructive elite to destroy the morale of the military. It's the continuation of the politically correct to equalize everything in America. Obama is the personization of this movement. Not one of these folks have ever served in the military or experienced putting their life on the line for these elite. I think it's disgusting.

IMHO (because I haven't been) it could only be adequately assessed by someone who had been there.  Kinda falls a little bit into the retired pay discussion, but in any case the great majority of our citizens just don't have a clue as to what life on a steel tub for months on end with no "normal" social interaction is like.  I

And I could tell some stories about shenanigans at my tech school in Mississippi in 1967 but that was then, this is now.

I remember a 19 week class I attended years ago.  We were on a class trip and two of my military classmates (a LTC and a Major) on our bus mooned two of the guys on the other bus while we were going down I-95.  It was pretty funny when it happened, but if it showed up on YouTube today, I'm sure someone would say it was conduct not befitting an officer.

I wonder why the Navy didn't even try to defend the guy.

I think the country was moving in the direction of PC long before Obama took office.  I wonder if this doesn't have more to do with the repeal of DADT.

I think you are on to something re DADT, and I am afraid it is just the beginning.  If the homosexual community pushes it too far blood will more than likely be shed.  There are a lot of heterosexual service members who do not think highly of that community and did not want DADT repealed.  They tolerated it as long as nobody rubbed their noses in it.

After all these folks are trained to fight.

I think you are right.  Talking about it theoretically is one thing, but on the ground it is something else.  I'm afraid it's going to be  very long and bumpy road to "acceptance".  You can't legislate behavior.

Just the beginning. I can't imagine what kinds of problems that causes...

-iN THE WORLD OF TODAY, THIS CAPT SHOULD BE RELEAVED FOR STUPIDITY. -I ASSUME THAT NOW SOMEONE IS LOOKING INTO THE CAPT WHO WAS IN CHARGE OF THE ENTERPRISE WHEN THESE TAPES WERE SHOWN. HE'LL BE THE NEXT TO BE PUNISHED -OF COURSE THIS IS THE FALLOUT FROM THE REPEAL OF DADT. EVERY OFFICER OR NCO WHO OPENLY EXPRESSED ANTI-GAY BELIEFS WILL BE HUNTED DOWN AND PUNISHED OR FORCED OUT. -HOWEVER, THIS GUY WAS JUST STUPID.

Alas, Neptune… now, who in our new namby-pamby navy will kiss your belly?

I hate to see this.  One stupid mistake ruining what otherwise must have been a very good career. Where's the "let's get him some sensitivity training" and move on from there?  I have a lot of objections to what is happening here.

This is a media event.  Some idiot journalist got their hands on the video… maybe even “leaked” by a disgruntled “alternate lifestyle” sailor and then an editorial staff whipped it into a feeding frenzy.

As any veteran on this forum well knows, the military is a high stress environment.  We vent some of this stress and establish esprit de corps in ways which baffle… and would certainly annoy… some civilians.  Some military rituals feast on irreverent and outrageous behavior.  But then, war is irreverent and outrageous.

If one thinks that forced tweaking towards political correctness within the military will not have consequences to morale and esprit de corps, then that someone is naïve.  If one insists on a co-ed, gay tolerant military, then one should tolerant the self deprecating rituals attendant thereto. Either you are part of the team… or you are not.

M-RET, -I agree with you, ...unfortunately, or fortunately---depending on one's perspective, the Tailhook Purges (1991) put an end to those kinds of military traditions... -Impact on military effectiveness????? --only time will tell!

I think Tailhook went far beyond a politically incorrect video.   Tailhook involved a physicality that a video doesn't.
