the Congress cannot and will not get anything productive done for the people they represent. They are busy worrying about the wrong stuff. Typical.

Why do you have that attitiude concerning Congress, yet end many of your posts with "God help us," or some similar sentiment?

Because with a Congress like ours, we need God's help. Both sides of the aisle spend time on this kind of BS, instead of doing what they are being paid for -- which is representing the people that sent them to Washington and legislating. Not writing stupid letters to the President.
Like Boehner today -- hold his pocket copy of the Constitution aloft, while quoting from the Declaration of Independence. He's off to a great start. I wonder if he's ever read the Constitution.

No, it's getting down to the people's business. Not making speeches, talking in sound bites and writing silly letters.
I guess living and working in the DC area for so long has made me jaded. A good portion of the BS never makes the national news, but when you live around DC it's all that is on the news.

So an in-effectual congress/senate is the natural state of affairs? Or is this just our generation's development? Seems to me that the primary work done by most of those people is CYA and maintaining status quo - i.e. get re-elected. How will it ever change?

It will stop when WE stop re-electing them and with term limits.
Also, we have got to stop sending lawyers and accountants to Congress. Those are two professions whose training and experience are that money can be made out of chaos. Lawyers write in obfuscatory language which is unintelligible to the average person… that they may control the average person.

I agree. It's term limits. Not only for Congressional members, but for the Senior Staffers who are almost as powerful as the Members. It would help if they were also not treated like visiting royalty. No one wants to offend them by telling them the truth, because they are afraid of the consequences. No wonder they never want to leave.

I cant believe that I have not thought of limiting the staff positions(term limiting). Tort reform and term limits have been my mantra for the past bunch of years. Thank you Hound for opening my eyes a little more.

-The congress already has term limits. For the senate it is six years. For the house it is two years.
-These term limits are activated by voting!!!
-We must take responsibility for the peoples representatives we send to congress. "We the People" determine the limits!!!
-The Constitution is not the problem. We and the people we send are the problem. We must improve our knowledge of government and of the people we send to govern.
-....but when citizens can't read, write, speak the language, and just want to be taken care of ...........

In many respects I think the senior staffers are more powerful because they tend to set the agenda and control the schedule for the congressperson, not to mention actually draft the legislation while their boss bloviates for the cameras. That is why I think every member should be forced to actually read every piece of legislation before they can vote on it. I guarantee if that were the case they would force their staff to make the legislation more user friendly, shorter and easier to understand for the common man. Its great to be a dreamer.......

Term limits are the Catch 22 for these people and they know it. They can't accept enough "contributions" or invest in enough "opportunities" in 2 (I presume) terms to justify leaving the fat cat law firms. The guy(s) that is elected and accomplishes this feat will have to be paid a lot, and that would cut into all of their pies - don't overestimate the morality of anyone who would allow it to happen.
