My son and I plan on doing a little camping up the river. I have been looking for some things to do while camping and ran across some web links about gold and Lake Martin. I thought it would be fun to have him pan for gold to get his imagination going. Are there any specific rules against this? Anyone to contact prior to? Thanks for the help.

Do not know that there are laws that would prohibit one from panning for gold (assuming it was done on Alabama Power property).

I have dug up many a gold find in the basin area.

Most people know about the 49er's but very few know about the 29er's, the gold fields of Georgia and East central Alabama. Some of the most pure gold in the word is found in our area. for over 100 years is still one of the best kept secretes around. I have been paning for years. Never getting rich but finding gold in East central Alabama is like picking up penny's. If you know where to look and how to look it's not a stretch to take home 1/2 to 1 Oz in a hard weekend.

Come to think of it, I've made finds in both kinds of basins. But the greater majority of them came from good ole Lake Martin.

Do you have a metal detector that distinguishes gold from other metals? My son lost a cross in the lake bed in front of our cabin and the cheap MD I borrowed found every nail, screw, and scrap of ferrous material but not the cross. Don't know if such a thing exists but I was responsible for the loss and would love to find it. Any ideas?

Short answer, yes... But even the best detectors with acute discriminators will sometimes be fooled. Silver and copper are unique and can be identified fairly easy. Gold, oddly, can be mimicked by aluminum pulltabs. The signature does have some minute differences. I'll bring it Sat also. Might find it if he knows the approximat area.
