Webb, the Virginia Democrat Senator seeing he has no hope of winning in 2012 is abandoning ship.  Like what happened leading up to the 2010 shellacking I think we will see a number of other so-called "conservative" Democrats choosing a return to the private sector to spend more time with their families rather than a humiliating primary defeat or even worse, a defeat in November to the GOP.

Webb was only marginally better than Harry Reid and voted with him to preserve Obamacare......looks like the GOP is already +1 in the Senate unless Allen has another macaca moment, which I doubt.

He may have decided not to run again, but he'll be back. He's actually a very good guy, very well thought of with a lot of personal integrity. I don't think we'll see pictures of his shirtless self trying to lure some Craig;s list babe. (Still laughing about that)

Just read that he was dead certain to lose.  He did seem like a good guy overall although he voted with Reid to prevent the repeal of Obamacare.  A final nail in his electoral coffin unless he wants to come back as a GOP candidate.  What is interesting and not much discussed is how the Democrat party is purging itself of moderates.  Funny how that doesn't get much press......

I don't think it had anything to do with being re-elected or not. Everything I've read about him is that he doesn't like the way politics are conducted today and decided he just didn't want to be a part of it anymore. Doesn't like to campaign, doesn't like to raise money, doesn't like the grip and grin. Obviously did not fall in love with the trappings of high political office. I think he's admirable. I really think that there are other people like him. I think a lot of the "retirements" that we are seeing are people just fed up with not getting anything done.

Hound, you spent all that time in D.C. and you really want to make the statement above?  It amazes me how you see nothing but benevolent intentions with Dems but love to believe the worst about Republicans.  Have it your way, I will trust more what I read and 50 years of watching politicians than your opinion on this.....

they are not all bad. There are some good people that want to get things done, and represent their constituents. Yes, there are $$holes, and people who act like they were "to the manor born", but the good ones don't generally rise to the party leadership. They do their homework, ask intelligent questions and really make an effort to understand. And I do think that it is possible to get tired of all the politics and the bureaucracy and just decide not to do it anymore. Not everyone enjoys political back-biting. Remember I lived in VA, and came to know of Webb well. He's quite sane, he doesn't schmooze. My understanding is that he plans to do more writing. I believe he has written two book previously.

Webb knew he can't win in  2012 and he wisely chose to bail.  They all have their reasons but no one likes to have to raise millions of dollars to get beaten, especially an incumbent.
