We got a new phone number 16 months ago. (MONTHS.) Since then, hardly a day goes by that we don't get calls for the people who used to have the number; from the nature of the calls, he is a doctor, and she is in real estate.

At first it was understandable. When we answer a call for one of them, we explain that this is no longer their number. But most of the messages wind up going to the machine. And it was on one of those machine-messages yesterday that we learned that someone was calling the real estate woman because she had left her card at their residence, so obviously she is handing out business cards that still have her old number on them. That might have been the last straw.

Of course, we would like to take this up with those people personally, but the only info we have on them is their old-- our current-- phone number, so that won't work.

So if you know a doctor who is married to a real estate person, and they got a new phone number about 16 months ago, please tell them that starting March 1, we'll tell anyone who calls for the doctor that he lost his license after he was caught selling narcotics to grade-schoolers. And anyone who calls for the real estate person will be shocked to learn that she ran off with Alfonso, the 16-year-old kid who was doing their yardwork.

Maybe THAT will make them care enough to let their friends and clients know that they have a new phone number.

Be carerful, the doctor could sue for slander. To solve your problem just have your number changed.

After 3 years, we're still getting bill collectors calling for the person that had our phone number before. I explain to them that she has not had this phone number for 3 years; then they ask me if I know her new number... one man called me and wanted to know if she was living in some trailer park... The worst thing about it is that when I say I don't KNOW this person, I usually get a "yeah, right" kind of response. And lately I am told that some website has my number listed for painter.

I understand the frustration, but even the lady saying she was left a card is no evidence that the previous folks are still handing out your number (as many people keep a card file for years).  A Realtor wants to be called, so I highly doubt she is still passing old cards. Numbers can stay in print for a long time, and it seems the number belonged to some popular folks

You may provide some personal satisfaction by spinning a tale, but as PF said it could come back on you and will probably do little if anything to solve the problem...just change your number, and ask for one that has been out of service for a long time.

If you do not use your phone for business, and have friends who have a sense of humor - just let calls from unknown numbers go to your answering machine. Have your greeting say something that has your real first names, and confirm that the caller has reached a business - something like "Mustang Ranch, Lake Martin location", or "Cathouse Performance Marine, Lake Martin location".

I have seen some signs in the area for a Realtor, and the phone number has been obliterated with spray paint. Is that her? If it's you who did the paint job, you've missed some of her signs. If it's her, then she is still putting up signs with the old phone number.

Then Uncle Sam should just say "I heard a rumor that..." No slander, and he can point to this very thread as evidence of the rumor.

No way HE should have to change his number because the previous owners are inconsiderate.

It might be unlikely that the realtor left a card with an old number, but it's equally unlikely that someone got the card, and decided to pull out an OLD card to call her back instead of just looking at the number on the card in his/her hand, don't you think?

Just don't turn Dee Dee loose on me, I figured Mustang Ranch/Cathouse Ho se Hangout may have some common features. Big difference is you go to the Ranch to git hit, and you go to Cathouse to avoid gittin' hit. ;-)

yep, thats part of my point......lots of assumptions being made here. How does one know when the card was really left? How does one know how the person really got the card? All I'm saying is it doesn't add up for an agent to leave a card with an outdated number, but even that's an assumption.

Well, there's another assumption...."the previous owners are inconsiderate". There are many people who try and contact Doctors and Real estate agents from friends to family to clients to prospective clients to solicitors. It's more than likely the previous owners did notify  their friends, family, and active clients of a new number. That still leaves a lot of people likely to call an old number listed on old cards, old Rolodex and address books, and old phone books without the previous owners being "inconsiderate" .

Sure, Uncle Sam has the right to keep that number, but the quickest and easiest way to a solution is to change it. I also highly doubt the previous owners know anything about this or that they could do much about it  even if they did.

Obviously you know the name of these folks since the people calling area asking for them. Aside from asking the callers more clues as to who they are... real estate company? Husbands full name? Where he practices medicine etc. You can look them up on the Secretary of State's website for licensed professionals and it will give you a current address & phone number. I think you are spending too much time being angry. Have a glass of wine.

I was out of town Saturday, and returned home Sunday morning to find 23 messages on my machine. All 23 were for them. That's 23 people who left messages; no telling how many people hung up without leaving a message.

Had I been home, that would have been at least 23 times that the phone rang, and 23 times that I got up to answer it, and 23 times I talked to someone who did not want to talk to me.

When you get 23 calls in one day for someone else, get back with me about whether or not I should be mad. And when it happens almost to you almost every day, I'll even listen.

Most of the calls for her are friends; I know all about when her Red Hat Club meets, when her friends meet for lunch, what her duties are at church, and so on.

Most of his calls are professional, and often start "I saw you earlier today" or "I need you to refill that prescription you gave me last week.) So it sounds to me like many of these calls ARE coming from friends and current patients, people who should have the new number.

As RR said below, I'd just ask someone what their full names are and then look up another number and call them. I still highly doubt they know whats going on, and I would imagine they would want the problem corrected too. Another possibility (maybe not likely in this case) is a very similar number.....my wife's business cell # is very close to a local Doctors office and she gets calls for them on a regular basis.

I still think your best bet for what is obviously a very well known and often used number is to bite the bullet and get it changed. Either way, good luck with it.

LMAO with your post! Get a grip and deal with it! You should have figured out their names and give them a call. People worry too much about insignicant stuff. How long does it take to hit the delete button.

Here is a quick fix. Really. Imma go get Dr.s education and license right quick. Dee Dee gonna school up and get license to sell homes. You sell Cathouse Marine for me. Forward your phone to my phone, and we are all set up in business. My phone has'nt rang 23 times in one day ever. this may be a good business venture. (just kidding). LOL. Sorry you are aggrevated. "JUST SAYIN"

a situation where someone else's phone got tied into my number. The phone would ring at my place, but be for the other person. We would both answer the phone. I had both my number and the other person's number ringing at my house. Had to call the phone company to get it all straightened out. Long time ago - if I remember correctly, the wires were somehow crossed or combined at the street box.

Well sure. But I don't understand why you don't track this person down. Wouldn't you think that would solve the problem? Get the correct number and leave it on your VM along with the usual message and see if it gets better. ???? Maybe I need a glass of wine....

Uncle Sam, I am beginning to wonder about you. I would have changed my number a long time ago. Better yet if you have cell service at your house I would have dropped the land line. You are starting to lean towards the stupid category if you continue down this same road. Just sayin!!!!

When a number is changed, does the phone company still advise the callers of the "new" number? I know they had in the past, and if that is the case, an outgoing announcement may be the best way to deal with the problem. A former employer (large telco, if you can hear me now) sent a mailing out with an incorrect tollfree number. The motel to whom the number belonged set an outgoing announcement to advise that the wrong party may have been reached and provided the correct number - our calls were outnumbering theirs by a significant number.

can't you just block that # so that the call never rings through?  and be done with it?

Block what number? If I read it right, the problem is that people keep calling HIS number looking for someone else. What number should he block? If I kept on reading right, one day there were 23 different people who called. I don't know what it takes to block a number, but I would bet that having to do it as many as 23 times a day would get old.

Geography prevents me from dropping the land line and depending solely on cellular service. Hills and trees make cellular reception spotty at best one a couple of carriers, and completely non-existent on all others I have tried, including my own.

And I have tried to track down the previous owners of this number. They aren't in any of the phone books I have checked, and that encompasses Alexander City, Dadeville, Goodwater, Tallassee, Wetumpka, Eclectic, Millbrook, Kowaliga and Camp Hill, off the top of my head.

Emails to the real estate office have yielded zero replies; messages left there have not been returned.

When I have talked to someone who has called to talk to one of them, I have told them that this is no longer the right number, and asked them to please ask the doctor and the realtor to update their records, and pass along their new number. I would like to think that at least one of those people has done that, assuming they ever found the people.

There are probably other things I could do, short of giving up this number that all of my friends now know (and it wasn't that hard to tell them about it) but I guess I'm just too stupid to know what those things are. According to you, anyway.
