The article in the Outlook by the publisher on the subject of building a hotel and convention center at Wind Creek Park? I thought it was right on the money.

Did not see the article, but sent David Bronner an email about a year ago saying the largest underutilized asset the State of Alabama had was Wind Creek State Park, here is a copy of the email. Guess what no reply - LOL.

Dear Mr Bronner:

I understand your business idea for the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail was conceived while you were on vacation.

I too have had a similar thought while living part-time on Lake Martin for the past 5 years and am confident if done correctly Lake Martin could become a permanent family destination vacation site. The summary business concept is as follows:

 - Wind Creek State Park from my understanding has a vast amount of land bordering Lake Martin and is centrally located to all travel to and from Lake Martin and within a reasonable distance from Birmingham, Montgomery and also Atlanta. Per Wind Creek's website the State park sits on 1,445 acres with over 600+ campground sites and of those 187 are waterfront.

So the concept is a follows:

 - Lake Martin lacks a resort style vacation facility or maybe even a hotel and cabin type community to attract tourism and conventions to the region
- With the vast amount of property bordering Lake Martin a top class golf course could be designed to rival some of the finest courses throughout the US and draw a nation event to the region.
 - A first class marina offering full services and which also rents pontoon, ski, fishing boat and personal water crafts and maybe offer guided lake tours or professional fishing guided tours, boat storage, etc.
 - The north end of the lake does not currently have a on water dining establishment and the housing density is such that a restaurant could be supported as well as supporting the marina.
 - Design and develop walking and hiking trails, playgrounds, pavilions, etc.
- If done properly this resort destination could also attract such things as national BBQ and Chili cook offs, water ski tournaments, etc etc etc.  The sky would be the limit in terms of hosting national events.

So in summary the overall concept is to develop a 1st class hotel/convention, golf course, marina and/or retirement community to attract tourism to the area and establish Lake Martin as a 1st class family oriented vacation destination and/or retirement community. The shoreline of Wind Creek has some of the most beautiful views of the lake and the pristine shorelines and topography are such it is just yearning for such a 1st class facility.

In addition, the counties of Tallapoosa, Coosa and Elmore rely heavily on the lake to promote / support the local economy and with Russell Corporation continuing to lay off employees the continual reliance on Lake Martin tourism is vital to supporting the continual growth of this regions economy.

The above are just some high level thoughts and if there is any interest I would be more than willing to meet with you or whomever regarding this conceptual business idea.

It's not on line yet or I would have linked it. They are a little behind. The article was in the Opinion section for the "weekend edition Feb 19-20th. Its worth tracking down and reading. It's part of a series of "What If" which is a series of constructive articles on ideas about what the community can do to get the local economy moving in a positive direction. BTW check out the article in the paper today (Wed 2nd) on the "big: population gain for the county and quotes from the guy at the LM Development Alliance. See if you were left scratching your head at the interpretation of the statistics like I was.
