How do you guys handle the rude fishermen,fishing around your piers or am i the only one with this problem. I work to keep structure around my pier for my fishing pleasure. I came home last monday and someone was tied(yes Tied)to my boat lift crappie fishing.Today I walked down to the pier to fish a little and a man and his wife were fishing my pier and just stayed there while i moved the poontoon over to the lift,i had to ask them to move so i could get on MY lift.then when i started fishing i thought they would move on but no i guess since he was there first he wasn't about to move on. When i finally spoke my displeasure he said i was an A$# HOLE. What do ya do?

The lake belongs to everyone but your pier belongs to you. If they refuse to untie, casually take you Bowie knife over to their mooring line and sever it, or at a minumum start casually tossing pebbles into the water around their boat. Would also help if your 1911 were casually and visibly tucked into your waistband....:>)

There are just some folks that come on the lake (and live on it too) that haven't been raised right. Get used to it. It's part of the scenery. Confrontations usually don't get you anything but stress. I'd be polite but firm about it but walk away from a confrontation like that. Satisfaction comes from visualizing the havoc they bring upon themselves during their lives.

Begrudgingly agree......while it would salve the soul to brandish a .45, the quiet and diplomatic approach is the correct one.
But it surely would be fun to pop a cap at an imaginary moccasin near their boat...:>)

Agreed. I do not have a problem with anyone tying off to the pier and fishing as
long as it does not cause any damage or impede anything I may be doing
at the time. No harm no foul. Unfortunately you own your pier but not
"around" it. They can fish where they like. Some are rude but you can
find that anywhere. He was not necessarily a rude fisherman. Just a
rude person in general. Don't lump all fisherman together. There are
some good ones out there.

we have people fishing our dock ALL the time too! Summer Lover is correct about a dog and a tennis ball ...unless you want to fish too!
what I have found to work really well is my camera with long lense! i call them my "fishermen chronicles" ... they usually troll a little farther off my dock when the camera starts flashing! :)

Be nice and welcoming. ("wow, no one ever ties up here and fishes!! Nice to meet you!!") Get in the boat with them. Ask for a beer. No beer? Be nice and ask for a co cola. Drink all of it and ask for another. Be nice. Repeat. Repeat. Repeat.
Ask to borrow a road and bait. Fish with them. Be nice. ask a million questions. Jabber the entire time. Be super nice. Repeat. Repeat repeat repeat.
You'll either make a friend or they will think you are weird and never come back. Either way, you're a winner. :)

Go out and start bragging about the size of the fish around your dock. Tell them you are not quiet sure how those fish grow to be that size around your pier. Tell them your neighbor thinks it is because his septic line runs directly into the lake and discharges just about where they are fishing, but that you feel confident it is from all the lead based paint containers you used to hold the structures on the bottom. Tell them how your nephew caught one last weekend that had 3 eyes. Encourage them to use extra Tobasco Sauce in their batter to help "reduce the funny taste". Even if they continue to fish, they should practice catch & release leaving the big ones there for you to catch later.

Unless the law has changed (and it probably has) your property ends at the high water mark 490MSL. Alabama Power allows you to build a pier. The ownership of the pier is questionable. Does anyone know for sure? I do know that during drawdown anyone can use the "land" in front of your seawall.

I am not a lawyer, so anyone in doubt needs to consult one.
My understanding as a lake area realtor is that yes, you do own your dock / boatslips / seawall / improvements. In fact, check your tax assessment, I am sure the tax man has them on there as taxable improvements.
You just have a deeded easement (? could be wrong legal term, ask a lawyer) from Alabama Power that allows you to put your dock poles in their dirt, aka the lake bed under 490. Their permission is subject to you complying with their rules, which is how they legally can say how and what type of docks and improvements you can build.
These types of things "run with the land" meaning they are passed from owner to owner. I have seen exceptions to this rule, like people that own a portion of the land under 490 that is out in front of their home. Also have seen where AL Power did not record the restrictions necessary on a few homes that would allow them to permit the docks. But these are really, really rare exceptions.
Any readers out there with any questions should pull out their documents from when they closed on the purchase, and call up the closing attorney and ask them these questions.

It is simple. Place a few potted plants on your dock (if it will support them, LOL) then attach a rotating sprinkler head to your hose running from the hose hang-out. Put your sprinkler on the dock with the plants and hose away. The more powerful the sprinkler the better.

Crappie fishermen can spot submerged brush with depth finders, and when they do, look for them to return looking for fish on the brush. There were a number of boats in my slough this weekend searching and catching some. They are within their rights to fish anywhere they can reach with a bait. If your intruders were catching fish, better get used to it.
However, I consider tying up to my dock, or worse, getting on my dock (other than to quickly retrieve a hung up bait) without an invitation the equivalent of some jerk sitting on the hood of my car, or Charter Cable trenching across my back yard without even ringing my doorbell, or camping in the left lane below the speed limit. These people just never had the solid crap beat out of them for being inconsiderate.
I think to just walk away from your situation?? I couldn't. I think it would be a good time to hammer in all the exposed nailheads on the dock and carefully untie his rope. He would get the point. And you are standing there with a claw hammer??

I had a man threaten to kill me because I was fishing around a submerged brushpile about 15 feet in front of his pier in his water. He actually had a blinking light and a sign saying not to fish around his pier. This occurred about 35 years ago somewhere around Dead Timbers. No one was on his pier when I was there (probably because it was 35 degrees and snowing). He came out of his house (about 60 yards from the water and walked out about 70 feet to the end of his pier just to tell me I had to leave because he had fixed up his water for his grandchildren. I told him his grandchildren weren't fishing and that he was bothering me (as I was catching lots of crappie). Folks, rudeness works both ways. I'll promise all of you that I'll never fish around your pier if you are on it, but I consider it fair game if your're not. "Can't we all just get along"

If they are fishing my structure off the end of my dock, and they are catching, I will every time go down and ask them what they are chunkin'. Fuel for my tackle box for later tonight. If they are rude, then the hammer comes out.

Thanks for all the input.I have lived in this particular house 13+yrs .I have never had this problem. I know that people are going to fish my dock and i do not have a problem with that. The problem i have is when i walk out to fish and they refuse to leave or move away. This lake has 750 miles of shore line and for the life of me i do not understand why the have to fish the 50 or 60 feet infront of my pier. Some suggest it is jeoulsy or just down right ignorance. I bet if i parked in front of their house and talked on my cell phone or checked the oil in my car the would be calling the police. i have the cameras and have thought of the irrigation pump and sprinkler.

Just for your info there is a 30 foot rule. I would like to know why with a lake so big why your feel it is within your rights to fish in front of a 16 foot wide pier? When obviously it irritates the owner. Also he is the one that has put the brush there for he and his familys use.I know i cant stop people from fishing around my pier but to tie up or to just stay there while me or my famly are fishing is just plain down right looking for trouble. and my patients are worn like 6 lbs line drug thru a rock pile!

to say it but its not your lake. You can't put brush in the lake off your pier or anywhere else and expect people to respect it. You know when people are being abusive and you should respond. But some things about communal living on the lake you have to accept as the price of your ticket to be on the lake. Personally I wouldn't want to fish your dock if you didn't want me there but there are some people...

Being an avid fisherman myself I would agree with both sides of the issue. The reason why we fish piers is b/c people do put brush piles out. I would 100% agree that it is rude to fish while someone is out on their dock. I think it is rude to fish even if the owners are inside. If I am going to fish a pier hard for more than five minutes I will only do it when the owners are not home. I would be careful about ticking some of these fisherman off. Remember that they know where you live and you know nothing about them. I don't mess with others when they fish around my green monster because you never know what people will do these days.

That is right they need to remember it is my house and i have a lot of toys in my house hammer and ect. They have a lot of shore line to fish that i have no controll over.But when they use expletives to describe me i take ofense and am willing to suffer the concquences of my actions. I hope they do come back and do damage that is what the cameras are for. Remember the gas thefts 3/4 yrs ago.It is amazing what people do when they don't know they are being watched or filmed.Need to put some on utube.

They are not only rude around your Pier..the other day I was at the boat ramp with my wife and grandchild. we watched a guyback into the water and load his little boat on the trailer. That was fine until he pulled halfway up the ramp,Stoped.got out and started to tie down his boat while 3 of us sat in the wait line. After finally getting his boat tied down he then unloaded the fishing rods into the truck/suv. Then He removed the fuel tank and put it in the suv. Then he removed the MOTOR and put it in the suv. Then he walked around shaking everything to be sure all was tight. Then his girlfreind/wife got out of the driver seat and got in the passanger seat. THEN...he removed his outer clothing and got in the suv.....Some people just dont get it.

This thread is more than amusing to read. Where do the homeowners think their property boundry lines stop? The lake is for EVERYONE'S enjoyment, not just yours because you have bought the property and built a pier or dock. That space that your dock or pier is on is not your property. I am willing to bet you also complain when the lake floods and bring debris up in your yards. I am also willing to bet the same people complain about the water level when it is low. All part of the entitlement that the homeowners think is theirs when they buy property on the water.
I bet these same people would complain if they owned beach front property and people fished or walked in front of their beach homes. Get a life people, it's not your water your pier and docks are in. And for those who complain when a fisherman come's on the dock to retreve a lure, would you complain if a kid kicked a ball into your yard and came to get it? Or would you be an A** and keep it? I think it's the same difference.
As for me, I have lived on Logan Martin Lake full time for 8 years. No I don't like when the water is low and I like it less when the lake floods. I don't like it when trash washes up on the shoreline and I have to pick it up (everyone that has taken a boat ride on the lake at sometime has had trash fly out of their boat by accident). I played on the lake for 30 years before I could afford to buy property and build our dream home and retire here. Now that we live here, I for one take the good with the bad and love every minute of it.

Would it bother you if your neighbors played kickball everyday in your yard at 5:45 am? How about if they came by in something as loud as a Harley and played kickball in your yard every morning at 5:45? I have lived on the lake for 20 years, and I have known for 20 years that the water that my pier sits in is not mine. This does not excuse the excessive rudeness of those who disrespect someone else's home. You don't own the road that your house is on, but if someone parked on it and talked loudly at 5:45 am, you would not like it. The biggest part of the problem is that the days of a few friendly fisherman fishing people's piers is long behind us. Now we have 100s of boats and many filled with people who have no common courtesy for those who live in the homes which border their recreational area. I'm glad you find it amusing. And I hope all will do unto others only as they want done to them. Karma is a mother.

I do find it amusing when someone complains about a situation that they put themselves in. There were fishermen on the water 20 years ago when you bought the house. Maybe not as many as today but nevertheless, they were there. Either you didn't care then when a fisherman fished your dock or didn't think about that when you closed on the property. I also live on the lake and have my share of boat traffic in front of my house. I believe there is a little stretch of the truth when you say they ALL sound like Harleys. Also when you say EVERY morning at 5:30am. Maybe new windows would solve that as I can hardly hear a boat when it takes off from in front of my house.
Buyer Beware! You buy a house on the lake in anywhere USA, you put up with all the inconsiderate people on the water. The ones who fly by the shoreline close enough to spit on, the ones on waverunners that come close while fishing, the ones who litter the lake, the waverunners, all the boats making noise, and all the other crap that goes with it. Lake life is not for everyone.
Alot of things have changed in 20 years. Traffic on 280 is worst, cost of living, gas prices, college tuition, road rage, etc. Complaining will not solve it. I can find many things to complain about. Being fortunate enough to live on the the lake and putting up with rude fishermen is not one of them. I've had my share of rude fishermen. Hooks in the upholstery and bimini of my boat, etc. I take it with a grain of salt. Like getting a stone chip in my windshield. Not a damn thing I can do about it. Well I could. Quit driving, move off the lake, etc.
Kinda like people who build in a known flood zone (which I'll never understand) and complaining when it floods. Or someone who buys a house near an airport, then complaining. Or buying a house you can't afford, but buy it anyway. The list goes on and on and on.

Well we do agree that perhaps people have gotten somewhat more rude in 20 years. I agree complaining doesn't do a bit of good, but I also think that there really is no reason why we as a society, as the people of this country, can't take a stand, speak out, and say, you know, we really should not be treating people this way...on the road, in the store, everywhere. I appreciate your remarks about buyer beware, but I am not enlightened by them. Of course any fool knows these things. Speaking the truth is not the same as complaining. Ignoring the truth is not helpful to anyone. I'm glad you are enjoying your lake house and I hope it will always remain good for you.
