Subject:   WebMaster? Malware/Virus Protection on a PC??

A "Worm/Virus/etc" got into my PC last year. Incidentally, right past Norton's products loaded and active. Well this thing grabbed my e-mail address book, and sent out e-mails to all my friends, included a link to a Viagra ad. No damage done to the PC, but I had some splainin' to do to the recipients. Lots of recipients. I finally just deleted my entire Address Book content to stop it, and that worked. Loaded some on-line product that found and zapped the "Thingy" that caused it. BUT>>
Question??
What is the best software available to stop this? Or, is it even possible? Just something we have to live with?
Better yet, is there somehow a way to funnel this evil thru some clearing house that can track these jerks and make them eat their soft drives?

Personally, I like Vipre Anti-virus. It has a small footprint so it doesn't bog your system down. The company that makes it is Sunbelt Software and they are a leader in identifying viruses and malware. I've heard that the new free version of AVG is quite good too. Nothing is 100% bullet-proof however. To supplement anti-virus, it is good to be vigilant and aware of unsuspecting ways executables can get served to you, then not be tempted to run them. My PC has been infected a couple of times and I felt like it happened because I let my guard down. It's difficult to say just what a virus does. The worst ones typically like to remain silent while they run a key-logger or file scan and send program. Those are the scary ones. Cleaning an infected drive can be tricky and it all depends on the virus and how attached it gets to system files. A friend of mine cleans systems as part of his business. The way he does it is to remove the hard drive, mount it as a slave on his computer to scan with several anti-virus programs just hoping to get everything. He says that works 80% of the time, and the other 20% need to be re-installed. I've also seen web sites marketing anti-virus that are designed in a way to make you think you have a virus, but in fact you don't. They want you to buy their product. That is basically deceptive advertising. If you still have a problem, I'd be willing to stop by and take a look when I'm at the lake. I'm practically in your neck of the woods. Send me a personal message. Bruce

This is Free and does the best job I have found.  There is no drag on the system.  I think it is great.

Most virus attack your registry files, after fixing my Wife's and several friends system (8+ hours each) I set them up with Non Admin (Regular User) right has saved me a lot of time and headaches.

Mav, do you mean a setup (Win7) where there is an Admin and a separate user, both identified at startup?? And choose the separate user to complete startup and internet access?
Thanks, Mack

That is correct. As only person that can change registry file and download software is the Admin. Unless hackers have figured a way around such.  Also make sure Restore points are set up as well.

Make sure Admin User requires a password.

I have been using Avira Antivirus (freeware) for 3 years and have set up to scan my systems every morning at 2:00am. Just an FYI Avira will send you Ads everyday and when you click OK then they send you the file updates, not a big deal to me as the Ads are their company Ads trying to get you to purchase a full license.

Hope this helps.
