Actually, there has been quite a bit about this the last few years. It's a very serious problem and there are a lot of theories abound about why it is happening.

I didn't know it until I talked to a beekeeper in Asheville but most colonies are traveling road shows. This guy would take his bees to CA and all over depending on climate differences & polinization needs. I think the problem is caused by the concentration of commercialized beekeeping (don't you have more flu in the cities?)and the decline of local beekeepers. Remember no bees=no food.

Have they ruled out some kind of virus in the colonies? I believe I read that the commercial bee keepers were also being affected.

if anyone knows of someone that has bee equipment (hives, suits, smokers) that they don't want anymore, please message me through this site or email at john at coleyre dot com

A buddy of mine and I want to do this, we have land to do it on and are ready to go but don't have the equipment. We will come get it.

I see old hives in pastures in the country all the time that look unused.  I keep hoping to see someone on the land so I can ask them for them so we can put them to good use.

Painting my hives today. My bees will arrive April 20th at the latest. I buy my equipment from Brushy Mountain. Getting used equipment is like getting used cars. You just took over someone elses problems. The disease problem comes from using used equipment. Years ago it was ok but now we need to make sure we are providing a disease free home to our little friends. With the loss of Mr. J. B. Shockley I decided to start with 2 hives and double each year to 20 or so. I have attended 1 class at Auburn and I am half way through a 4 day class online right now. I have some old timers that are going to help me set my bees when the arrive. Before you go through the trouble of getting equipment (specially if you buy it) make sure you have access to a package of bees. They are in short supply.

I would love to visit or talk to anyone that has a few hives out there...

   Good Luck...

I will still take any used equipment like suits or smokers, non-hive stuff.

my buddy was saying there is some way to grow queens by buying hives with larger cells? Then maybe you could sell the queens to defray total cost? Your thoughts on this?

Must be George Bush's fault

That is my first goal after I get my hives set next month. I have avoided studing "Rearing Queens" so that I can educate myself on the beginners portion of Beekeeping. We had a Beekeepers Association in Jacksons Gap but it is listed as inactive now. I wish someone would get a little club together so we could help each other. I would start a club but I have my hand in to many things right now such as Landlords Association Etc.

I will update everyone as soon as hives are set....

I visited Oakview Farms in Wetumpka this AM to buy some wheat etc. He also raises bees, 50 colonies, and sells his own honey.

He said they meet once a month, I think at the Coliseum in Montgomery.  Like 80 people attend.  You can call him at 334-567-9221.

He also has honey extractors and he will extract honey for you if you have your own hives.  This sounded pretty good to me since it will alleviate a lot of the up front cost relating to the extraction step.

Thanks,

I will call him Monday. Hives all painted, Going to build a few of my own and have some spares.. I have enough frames already to last a lifetime...Waiting on the weather to warm to receive my bees. Starting with 2 hives unless he has 2 extra colonies I would like to start with 4...

    Thanks again,,,
