Just had a multi-engine prop plane come *VERY, VERY* low over Manoy Creek area at 9:52 PM Wednesday. Since it was dark, we couldn't tell the height, but certainly much lower than anything we've ever heard here before. Sounded like a LAPES drop. We just stood there for a second or two, wondering if we would hear it crash into the ridge on the far shore. Lot's of tall towers over here - I hope the pilot had good night vision goggles. Anyone else hear any low flying aircraft tonight?

Not tonight (I'm on the other end of the lake), but C-130's come over low quite often during the week. It was probably a night training mission. They usually fly low level training missions between 1000 and 1500 feet, but since it's a large plane they can sound like they are very close to the ground.

I've flown in those C-130's, and I can't think of a more reliable aircraft. I guess I just need to put up barrage balloons.

..just heard the one I assume was the same one you heard...I also listened for a possible crash. We have seen and heard the C130's on various occasions in the past over Sandy Creek area.

I write software for those aircraft. They make practice rums from Duke Field to B-ham all the time.

I sometimes fly practice approaches into Rome, GA and they make low level passes and drop stuff on the field for practice. What is funny is I never actually see them even though we look. They come in low and fast, make their drops and peel off. Would love to see them at work sometime.

I remember talking to an Air Force type many years ago who claimed that they would fly C-130's so low over the Kowaliga Basin that they would drag their tails in the water.  It sounded more than a little bit far fetched to me, but on the other hand, cargo drops from just above ground level are a C-130 specialty.  A minimum altitude run is probably doable so long as the pilot remembers the power lines on the eastern end.  However, the AF guy said it was showboating and not training, so it is still far fetched.  I do remember getting buzzed by a C-130 in the basin once, but it was not low enough to get any tail feathers wet.  I

I was on a few C-7 Caribou rides in Nam I will always remember. Those AF Guys could do things with it on dirt strips you would find hard to believe. This was not show boating. They got shot at and drew mortar fire frequently. You knew it by seeing the pushed aside remains of unlucky aircraft on all the re-supply strips.
