Press Release View print version Lake Martin Boat Ramps Closed April 28, 2011 In the aftermath of the extreme tornado damage, Alabama Conservation and Natural Resources Commissioner N. Gunter Guy Jr. has closed all ADCNR boat ramps on Lake Martin until further notice. Commissioner Guy has also directed that boaters stay off Lake Martin so as not to hamper emergency operations. “The large amount of debris in the water from the tornadoes has created an extremely hazardous situation on this lake, and we are strongly advising boaters to stay off these waters,” he said. In the interest of public safety, Alabama Power Company has also closed all of its boat ramps on Lake Martin. The public is advised that any non-emergency personnel found to be boating on Lake Martin during the period of emergency operations will be stopped and questioned by law enforcement. The Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources promotes wise stewardship, management and enjoyment of Alabama’s natural resources through five divisions: Marine Police, Marine Resources, State Lands, State Parks, and Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries. I was going to post about this...Was out yesterday helping pick up customer boats for Clearwater Marine and there are power lines in the water as well as all the debris.  A prop could get hooked on something and pull power poles or trees onto the boat, not to mention the large pieces of metal and countless other materials floating just below the surface and hard to see.  A very dangerous situation.  Good call on closing the boat ramps.  If anyone needs a boat or other watercraft towed (provided it is floating or can be bilged out enough to float), give them a call and they will go get it for you.

Any idea how long this will be enforced? Was going to head to the lake to check on the house and while there would like to get out on the water.

From the Tallapoosa Country Sherrif's Dept:  "The lake is closed until further notice".  Chuck's Marina boat ramp has been closed, they have been told not to put customer boats in the water.  Even if you are not close to the damage, as the river flows and the Dam generates power, its going to pull debris out of the affected sloughs.  You cannot see enough under the water and safely drive your boat out there.  In addition, the more people driving in and out of these sloughs, the more debris that are being pulled out.  The Sherrif's Dept. has also arrested 3 for looting and yesterday while we were rescuing a sinking boat, were almost hit by someone too busy looking at the damage to watch where they were going.  I won't be going back out until I get the all clear. Stay safe everyone and Prayers and condolences to those who lost so much.

I hear that they have reopened all the boat ramps. Can anyone confirm this?

Just crossed Kowaliga bridge about an hour ago; there were empty trailers at the ramp, no obvious signs that the ramp was closed. Quite a few boats on the water too. Jumped on the jetski and headed out, didn't notice any debris until I got over near Cocktail Slough. Also saw Marine Police over there but they were not obviously stopping any boaters.

tell any reasonable person that operating a boat anywhere between the affected area and the LM Dam is a risk. And already stressed law enforcement folks should not be concerned, at all, at all. Way too much to work through without saving a gawker.

My brother put in his boat at Kowaliga, and as soon as he went under the bridge, Ned stopped him from going any further.  He was told that no boaters, other than people who had property in the area, would be allowed in the affected areas due to the possibility of looting.  Serves my brother right for going sightseeing, especially since he should have been going up Little Kowaliga to check on the cabin.
