Subject:   Dish v DirectTV
Date:   5/7/2011 9:14:27 PM (updated 5/7/2011 9:46:31 PM)

I might be about ready for another installment of the LM forum Dish v DirectTV discussion.  While being without cable for awhile is so minor I should not even worry about it, I do think I could clear enough trees on the West side of my house (including the big leaning pine that needs to come down soon)  to put a satelite high on the front of my house and get a good shot to the southwest.  Also, I think it is time for me to look seriously at a generator big enough to run part of my house, instead of the little guy I have that has served me well for 15 years.

Questions:

What is a ballpark cost for regular channels, college football, local news?  Installation, monthly?
When does your satelitte go out?
How many TVs can you run with different channels?  Do they all need a receiver, is that a separate per month cost?
Has anyone tried internet connection via satellite?  Last time I checked DSL was not an option here, and I have internet connection via cable modem.

What other questions should I be asking?

Have had DirecTV at the lake for 10 years.  No problems.  Rarely lose picture for long but will digitize in bad weather to the south and go out for a short (2-3 min usually) time in those weather situations.

Have to have a box for each TV in house and it's $5 per box.

We have the middle package (silver?) with about 40 music channels (great selection) and most channels anyone could want.  I think it's about $69/month.

We have Hughesnet satellite for our ISP.  It is fine for e-mail, internet browsing.  They have daily /download limitations and if you exceed, things get real slow.  I work as a medical transcriptionist and run into that problem which is a big hassle so I rarely work here at the lake.

Hope that helped.  :)

Give me a call and I'll fill u in with my full take on the subject. In short, I have Dish and I'm quite satisfied (I've had Direct in the past and was less satisfied). Both have their advantages and disadvantages. Dish is slightly less expensive, but Direct has become much more competitive over the last few years.  Also, Dish may be a bigger problem because of satellite location at your house, but it depends on those trees.

Now, get to work on those '
maters; I'm counting on you for a "bumper" crop.....

I have had Dish for about 8 months...have the middle package plus a sports package added on($5 mo. extra but needed to get Braves baseball). I am presently paying $51 a month guaranteed for 24 months to which you are also committed...that includes $6 mo. for service agreement. The receivers for the first two rooms are free..additional rooms at small per mo. fee. I have been quite satisfied to this point. They have also thrown in the Starz/Encore package free for a year...had HBO free for first 3 months...free previews also of channels you may not have. On the down side, they have squabbles with FOX causing disruptions. Currently, they have taken down the WCOV Fox Montgomery channel because of that...once they took down FSN and SportSouth for a few days. Fortunately, I have an outside antenna to get WCOV. I have rain outages only when there is an intense storm coming from the southwest..lost the entire 2nd half of the NCAA Final(as it turned out..nothing to see). The best internet deal going is the Charter Lite on cable...$20 per month and just as fast, in my opinion, as their faster stuff.

I will give it some good thought and check out some installations. I will need to take down several trees, but I could let most of them fall toward the lake bed during the winter. Does anyone have a lot of trees in the area the the satelite is pointed.  I have always heard that one limb blowing over the signal line can play havoc.

If you are leaning to Dish, you might want to consider pole mounting the dish out near the mater's away from the trees altogether. Can't be that expensive to do a shallow trench from there to the house.
We have had Dish for years without many interruptions. A big thunderhead coming at us out of the SW will knock it down for a couple of minutes only. We have a single receiver that operates 2 TV's in different rooms at once. Not bad at all. About $70 a month.
Now generators I know a lot about. Don't have 1 at lake, but in B'ham yes, after being out of power for 5 days, I got one (Ivan). Generac 15Kw, wired into breaker box, auto on/off. Carries all 120VAC breakers in a 3000 SqFt home, no problem. $5000 installed. No 220VDC wired, not enough capacity. But, the fridge, microwave, all lights, freezer, coffee pot,, etc stays on!! Runs on natural gas, but accepts LP.
Good luck looking.

Since the generator was installed, our power has been interrupted maybe 20 times, for a total of maybe 2 minutes each time. Long enough to knock down the computer and blink all the clocks until the gen comes up. Just in time for the commercial AC to come back. Sooooo, maybe installing a generator is a deterrent?? Knock on wood.
