or is it just wait till it sinks or floats to shore? I am concerned for the slow start that may be coming for our lake community as long as this threat to boat damage is an issue.

Talked to a local working with insurance company. They are concerned over the boats and vehicles at the bottom. One of the greatest concerns seemed to be leakage from batteries as well as fuel and oil. Have no idea how they can raise all these vehicles without lowering lake!

Boats less than 26' are required by the coast guard to have flotation installed to prevent sinking. There are probably no boats on the bottom. Cars--how many have been reported missing? Gas and the small amount of battery acid--long gone. Lowering the lake will simply make the debris float out of the sloughs into the main part of the lake. Question remains--where are the barges and cranes required to remove the house parts, roofs, and other large items? The lake belongs to Alabama Power; where are they?

Have you considered what the debris would do to the turbine blades. Yes the lake was built for power generation 85 years ago, but recreation has become just as important, if not more important. The value of developed property on the lake exceeds 3.75 Billion dollars. The Feds know this and require lake operators to protect and do nothing to impede recreation. Remember that APCo has been the primary developer of recreation properties on the lake.

Not passing rumors. Relaying info I heard to validate it. Somebody said a boat will not sink in the lake. I have 2 people who can contest the theory!!

OSMS...you make more sense than almost anyone else on these boards. Its hard to argue with gool old fashioned facts. I would like to know the answer to your questions too...we have already lost too many as a result of the storms. We don't need further loss of life or serious injury due to debris and staying off the lake kills our small buisness men and women who depend on the economy of a thriving lake.
I pulled all that I could out of my cove and there were kids buzzing around at 60 on seadoos...foolish I know but they were kids...it scares me to death and while I know I will make a good decision regarding caution many others may not and stuff will happen.
Make NO mistake about it AL Power has a major interest in this as we all do, it is curious that they have not been more outspoken...same for Russell. The last couple of weeks should have been rightly all about recovery and lives, now the more long term affects must be addressed. We all need to help and remove obvious hazards for a while...

The following is posted on the Alabama Power web site:
Notice regarding lake conditions: Boaters and other users of Alabama Power lakes are advised to use caution on company reservoirs because of the large amount of debris in the water following the storms. This week, Alabama Power crews are helping coordinate cleanups on Lake Neely Henry and Lake Martin. They will help remove man-made debris from the lakes. These efforts support emergency cleanups only. The company will continue to monitor all lakes and reservoirs for debris. Lake users can call the automated Reservoir Information System at 1-800-LAKES11 for information about lake conditions.
Not exactly a rousing statement of support, but in their defense they have been kinda busy taking care of getting electric service back to those who lost it - and still have a house to need it.

I'm sure they've been swamped getting power restored where they can do so. And likely any "annnouncement" is worded by a lawyer to convey concern yet head off some future lawsuit. Just the world we live in today.
Only thing I wonder about is why there is no boom/net system to keep debris hemmed up and perhaps easier to remove while keeping more of the lake safer to boat in. Maybe that is not practical. Thinking out loud.

Thanks for pointing out the notice. Even though the tornado was an act of God, APC still has the responsibility to keep the lake clean. I hope they can handle the big stuff. We'll need to do a clean up of the small loose stuff as soon as they finish.

Hey Summer.....DY can deny, but it's only his statement that won't fly. OK, maybe the picture isn't exactly accurate either. DY is much older and hasn't been in that kind of shape since ahhh, ever. BTW, every Capn's favorite Capn' is in the mirror and his favorite co does all the work and chases after the ugly one.
